Relocating HD

Postby Bubblehead » Fri Apr 27, 2007 1:05 pm

I have a Raptor HD in one of my PCs which contained only FSX Standard and no other software or program. Can I transfer the HD to my other more poweful PC and make it work ?  Both PCs have WinXP.

Err you might have a few issues vis-a-vis the registry ;)

If it was FS9 all you would have to do is edit the registry but with FSX there are files which are installed outside the FSX folder for simconnect, service and activation. I have never tried to move FSX as described but I think that may not be possible.

You are speaking of moving the drive to a completely different computer so the supporting files and services in Windows will not be there and registered. Even if you managed to migrate all the files and services, activation will see a hardware change too.

Better to try a "repair" first, vs a re-install.

There are some utilities that will reset/set the registry pointer.
You may wish to use one of them first before you try the repair.

Most likely you will also have to re-activate FSX but that should not
present a problem.

My question would be, would the repair option even come up since the drive is being moved to a new hardware config.

I have never tried it, so I simply do not know the ins and outs of that one   :)

I appreciate all the inputs. This HD with the FSX is a Raptor 36G and it's quickly running out of space. I have a SATA 250 from my second PC which I am vacating and which I'm formatting. I'll remove the Raptor all together and install the SATA 250 instead. Then I will fresh load FSX. Will this be a prudent move, or it's wise to uninstall FSX from the Raptor first? The reason I'm hangin on to the Raptor with the FSX is that if I get a bum load on the SATA 250, I can always put the Raptor back to where it was.
