I wouldn't put games on the external-just my other stuff. Bad wording on my part. FSX would stay on the internal, most other stuff would go on the external if I got one- thanks for the heads-up though. I never knew that more than 50% used space had a performance impact. That could explain a lot ::).

I figured you would use the external for storage but I just wanted to be sure

For more information about hard drives, free space and the importance of using the right defrag software, review this thread

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 921679/0#0

There are about 4-5 posts in it that explain hard drives and how to properly run them

In your case I would caution using any 3rd party defrag solution such as O&O Defrag, especially with a HP or OEM brand system that may have system files which were designed specifically for the OEM model for XP SP2. Also, running such software on a hard drive as full as yours is can crash a system and destroy a Windows install.

Thanks for the info and the link. That thread is now stored in my favorites.

Didn't have a chance to post this earlier, but the repair WORKED LIKE A CHARM! If I could bake, I would send you a cookie, but since the last thing I cooked was better suited to make a hockey puck than food, this is what you get:

Image ;D

Anyway, for anybody having a problem with the activation seemingly stopping on its own for no reason, a repair works perfectly, although I'm pretty sure it overwrote some of my addons that changed default files (such as adding in TreeX, etc.). Make sure to back up that kind of stuff before repairing, config file included, just in case (I am ready and waiting to stand corrected on this). After the repair is complete, when you start FSX it will automatically try to reactivate it through the internet (at least it did on mine), and as soon as it is re-activated, you are back in business.

Thanks Nick! And enjoy your cookie-hope you like chocolate chip! ;D.

Oh, and by the way bowler_man, I'm sorry if I kind of hi-jacked your thread (both of them actually :-/). It wasn't really intentional. I just noticed that.

Ya'll (yes i said ya'll, I'm from Texas ;D) have a good night, day, whatever it is where you are.

Well good, then the fix for the problem is to run the reset tool first, then run the FSX repair.

Don't thank me... It was the link and info Doug Dawson provided that gave you the answer

This is going to sound really ignorant...I cannot figure out what might be the problem with having FS on an external drive, provided it is run from one computer only? My reasoning being that my external has the space, while my desktop does not - with all programs installed on the latter, if I keep FSX on it, it is down to something like 10-15% disk space remaining. Although the computer runs well, the HD space is not great at only 80 MB. (Planning to wait until a new computer is purchased before putting everything in it's normal place.)

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

The external drive would be slower than an internal one........

Aaahhh...I can live with it being slower for the time being, thought it could blow up my external or something! :D
