Stupid controllers...

Postby Wing Nut » Mon Apr 09, 2007 12:49 am

Who are they hiring for controllers in the FS world?  I think they must have been standing outside of Wal-Mart with a 'Homeless, please give' sign yesterday.  I was doing touch and goes between Lakeland and St. Petersburg tonight, and requested to land at Lakeland.  Fine, they say, straight in on Runway 9, follow the Beech on final.

The only problem is there was no Beech on final.  I get about 20 feet above the runway and they start telling me to go around!  Screw that, I thought, and landed nicely, but just a bit off-center.  They pipe up in a slightly pi$$ed off tone 'You were not cleared to land; clear the runway!'  So I get off the runway (looking for the FAA guys MS has in every game somewhere) and started peeking around again for the Beech.  The stupid thing was still seven miles out and at 1500!   I was supposed to blow my landing for that?!  I don't think so!  :)

What do you expect from that area of Florida.. they are hillbillies in that area, I know, I use to live just outside of Orlando in cow country.

That was many years ago though so the area has probably changed by now.

sounds like MS got it right from what I remember. They were probably using a ruler and holding it up to the tower window to visually calculate the altitude and distance

.... the number of times I've had a great IFR flight only to told on final to climb to FL150 or similar ....... it has prevented me from doing a tute on the subject for FSX like my FS2004/2  IFR Nav tute.. [smiley=huh.gif]

I have the Traffic add on with patch for FSX.  The TNG problem was rife in that and the offending planes sometimes didn`t land at all, no matter how long you waited.  I swung around behind some of them, they went within 400 feet of the runway then cleared off again.  I was still told to go around.

First off I changed all TNG flights to IFR, this made no difference, they carried on the same way in IFR too.  So I deleted them all.  No problems now, lol.  Don`t mind the occasional plane in front and getting landing rights before me, not one behind me and no intention of landing at all-even touch and go.

Yesterday I was flying to a small airport that was within ATL's class B airspace (albeit underneath), so I came in on Atlanta Approach.  THe guy kept telling this one Piper about the same traffic, in the same place.  In addition, he kpet telling this one plane to switch frequencies, only to have him come back.

On a side note, there was a Kenmore Air flight talking to either Cherry Point approach (NC) or Washington center the day before.

If only it was as good as the blurb, had that a while.  Its good, but didn`t stop my TNGs at all, even when changed to IFR/VFR.  Deleting them seemed to do the trick tho, lol.  Make sure you turn the voice off......

I know!  They were playing a trick on you!  The tower controller made a bet with some of the guys hanging around that he could make you go around for no reason.  By-the-way, the bet was $1000.  So, when you landed anyway, he got really p!$$3d off and started behaving meanly at you.

To bad you can't say things back to the ATC.

That was one of my early posts about FSX, before it came out.  Since Vista had voice recognition software, developed partly by the guys who developed the Sphinx engine, I thought maybe FSX could use it to recognize what you're saying, interpret it, then respond.  Like: "Tower, you're a real a-hole."  Then the tower would say: "Turn next taxiway, and go $cr3w your self." ;D

FSX can't do that but it sounds like a great add on. Anyone want to give this one a go. Calling all programmers!!

From FS2002 to FSX, some of the names I've called ATC. I've blown three monitors with my language. ;D

It gives no pleasure to say that ATC on FSX is no real improvement.  Apart from the go-round problem, there is the frustration of being given a series of headings that are little more than an indirect zig-zag to the FAF-with little or no logic.  I guess it will be 11 or 12 before they get that one fixed.

Or they give descent instructions too late.  A fully loaded airliner shouldn't be expected to make a sharp descent, but that's what I've seen several times.  I had one flight where the plane's (747) default rate of 1800ft/min didn't get me down from FL380 in time.  I found myself 2 miles from the airport and just passing through 10000ft, immediately called a missed a approach and went around.  Now I do 2000ft/min and it works most of the time.  Still have to bump it to 2500ft/min sometimes though.

Usually decent is made using idle-power using pitch to maintain speed, this usually means a rate of decent of 1800-2400 feet per minute. If you need to get down faster deploy the spoilers and pitch down allittle more to hold your desired airspeed.

Many aircraft are fake; they make the plane drop like a brick when you use spoilers, in real life this dosn't do much.  ;)

Shows I'm not a real-world pilot.   :)  I do go to idle power on the descents so I guess I should just plan on 2400ft/min on the descent.  It seemed extreme to me, but I guess it's not.
