Well, tried a friend's 256mb graphics card and temporarily added another gig of memory...still the SAME problems with all the default 747's and Bombardiers...no change at any / all settings. Guess I'll have to invest in a 512mb card, another 2 gig of memory and uninstal / re-instal again and see what happens from there. In the mean time, I'll just fly all the other aircraft that work fine in FSX. Hopefully this is not a "bug" in FSX.

for those of you having problems with your log book not recording flights and hung starts.  Try this.  Reinstall the FSX and make a back up copy of your flight log.  it is located in my doc's/flight simulator X.  copy the log book as often as you need to so that you have an up to date copy.  store the copy any place other than the original folder.  when you get a hung start or your log book stops recording simply replace the log book file in the flight simulator x folder with your back up and every thing is back to normal as of the last time you updated your back up.

There is a bug with the log book.  I have more issues with the log book and hung starts after flying missions or lessons.  you may want to avoid them until a patch comes out.  I know its not a hardware problem i have more than enough computer to run the game. ;)

The default 747's and Bombardiers are all white: no textures.

That must be your computer.
The wing parts on the default 747's are detached from the aircraft.

That's your video card not supporting shader model 2.
