Help with [BufferPools]PoolSize=1000000

Postby nowmormat » Mon Jan 08, 2007 10:37 am

I saw this tweak somewhere in the F$X manual:

[BufferPools]
PoolSize=1000000
This setting establishes the amount of video memory devoted to caching 3D models. Higher values increase frame rate smoothness and reduce the need to reload 3D models when rendering a scene, but may also use video memory that is needed elsewhere. The default value is 1000000.

Does anybody know what 1000000 (one million) stands for?
Is it pixels, triangles, kilobytes, colours.....????? :'(

many thanks in advance :)

The only thing I've noticed about it is that values >5000000 work really well on my card.

So it must be something related to the memory of your graphics card.

Not an expert however it was explained to me as reserved memory off the video card. Even with 512 reserving 5000000 is a stress because FSX loads quite a bit into the card memory. The FSX developer who posted that said 2500000 would be a better number because it should do the job and leave the rest for the sim. I use 2500000 as I found 5000000 caused other items to suffer. It is a system based number. The better video cards of the future will most likely have 1gig of memory and allow a much higher value.

Its not possible for that number to be kilobytes. I suspect it is either a bits or a a strait megabyte figure.

Well, I've tried 5000000 and I have not noticed shutters :D
I've also noticed that 180 deg. hard bank turns are a lot smoother. :o
I shall keep experimenting :D

Happy flying!

My video card is only 256mb and I run the sliders very high with no texture fixes so I have to keep that number lower.
