Argh. Messed up my tree textures!

Postby DizZa » Mon Nov 20, 2006 4:58 am

Hey all
I recently messed up my tree textures. They are upside down :( Can someone please name me the filenames of them, so then I can run a batch converter to flip them all?

Thanks guys.

Soz I dont know the names but when tweaking things it is always a good idea to back things up first.

I am sure there have been files uploaded to various places with the tree textures resized accordingly that you could download and install and that would fix your problem. Unfortunately I dont know which sites  :(

They are upside down because you have decided to do the texture tweaking stuff, but you didn't read the topic describing the procedure until the end. You are missing one step, described later.

I've heard that dds files are flipped when converted to bmp. That could be the issue as I think the bmp images have to be inverted prior to conversion so that they are upright when converted to dds.

If I'm wrong, correct me.

I did this tweek and had to wind up replacing the original dds tree file back into the scenery folder. If I recall it's all in remembering to click including the alpha chanels in the conversion.

The whole point of the tweek is turning the original dds files which are dxt5s into dxt1s which are less demanding on the memory. The 'upside down look of the trees is actually the alpha chanel that were never included in the conversion so remained inverted when they went back as dds from the bmp format.

Unless I'm wrong in the whole tweek there's never any need to 'invert' anything. that's done when doing the conversion from dds to bmp and back to dds automatically. The step of including the alpha chanel gets overlooked when not done correctly hence the inverted "trees".

having guessed all that, as I said I had to put all the original tree files (dds) back (assuming you didn't delete them). These files can be found easily because they all have the word "tree" in the file name. Also I'm not clear on if they are also tree files but I also put all files with the word "veg" in them.

Now that I confused my self I hope that makes sense to somebody.

The alpha channel issue concerns the trees with black triangle background color, because the alpha channel is used for specifying the transparency of a pixel.
Because alpha channel is lost during one of the conversion, some trees are messed up.

But the trees upside down is another issue, which you mentioned: the conversion from DDS to BMP does that, and those who have upside down trees simply forgot to re-make the conversion the other way around, that is from BMP to DDS if I remember well. This is explained later in the original post describing the tweak, but if one reader reads only the first page, he will not complete the conversion, and have upside down trees.

Thanks for your help; guys, but I manged to find a really old texture folder and installed that :D No problems yet.

The problem was my OWN batch conversion file which got mixed up with another older one. Anyway its a long story.

Thanks guys
