Overcast Disappears

Postby TXGrunt » Wed Jun 09, 2010 2:19 pm

when I am at an airport that has overcast a and I begin my climb my overcast disappears once I get to a certain altitude. Once I reach that said certain altitude the sky goes clear as if there was never any overcast!? The visibility goes to unlimited and there maybe a few clouds here and there.

As far as my settings goes, I have everything set to MAX.

Strange things happen with FS2004 Default Weather...It comes and goes at random!... :'(...!

I find the most consistent to be, downloaded; "Jeppesen Real Weather", or REX Real Weather from the local Weather Stations en route.

Paul...G-BPLF..FS 2004...FS Nav...and head in the clouds!... 8-)...!

the weather prob that you describe is a common glitch that there is no cure for.

Real Weather outside your house: clouds have a bottom and a top. If you go above the top of the cloud, you can see forever.

Sim.  Same principle.  clouds have a base and a Top.  If you go too high, you pop out of the clouds, and you can see forever.  Make a Major Thunderstorm, and then slew up to 80,000 feet and see what happens.   YOU ARE ABOVE THE CLOUDS.   ;D

sorry, nothing you can do.   Happy Flying 50' AGL in the fog.

If you want to keep that overcast the entire time, go into User Defined Weather-->Advanced Weather-->Visibility, and then set the top to 99,999ft, and then adjust your visibility slider to your desired level.
Now, no matter how high you fly, you'll have the same visibility conditions from ground to space.

I am guessing here that what you mean is that when there is a low overcast cloud cover above you when you are on the ground, when you climb above that low cloud cover layer, you expect to see the "undercast" below you when you look down.  Yes?  Then you look downs... and..... you see the ground as clear as if there were no clouds.  Right?

If so... that is a known "bug" with fs2004.

Using the paid vesion of FSUIPC along with the payware ActiveSky helps with this situation.....but does not totally cure it.

Not sure if it was fixed with FSX or not.

best,

jay. No, the problem was not fixed in FSX.  If you have low hanging clouds (fog) and you go above it, it disappears and you can see everything just fine.  HOWEVER! - If you go up high enough, and look back down... (not just 50 feet above it, but more like several thousand) it will show back up as low lying fog, but you can see through it but it is semi opague.
