Adding Brakes...?

Postby Fozzer » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:14 pm

Hello chums... :)...!

Purely out of academic interest, you understand.... ;)... ;)...

Is it possible to "add" brakes to an Aircraft not normally fitted with them?

My vintage SE5a is a joy to take-off, and fly around, even to land, with great care, but she really is a pain in the left brake-shoe when it comes to actually "stopping"!... :o...!

I add the usual:.....

[brakes]
parking_brake = 1
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

You will have to adjust the [contact points] section in the aircraft.cfg.

This is from the default J-3

point.0=1,

Try these...
point.0 = 3.000, -14.387, 0.000, -2.700, 1500.000, 0.000, 0.000, 180.000, 0.200, 1.000, 1.000, 0.000, 0.000, 1.000, 0.000, 0.000
point.1 = 1.000, 1.100, -2.400, -5.200, 2000.000, 1, 1.150, 0.000, 0.200, 1.000, 0.900, 0.000, 0.000, 2.000, 0.000, 0.000
point.2 = 1.000, 1.100, 2.400, -5.200, 2000.000, 2, 1.150, 0.000, 0.200, 1.000, 0.900, 0.000, 0.000, 3.000, 0.000, 0.000

There's more in this magic .cfg stuff than meets the eye... ;)... ;D...!

It's all explained in the "Aircraft Container SDK' which is nothing more than a Word .doc

Download links for all the SDK's (Software Development Kit) are available here- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555857

cheers,
Joe

I'd just like to point out that the SE.5a in your shot is not fitted with brakes. It's operated from grass airfields & has a tailskid to slow it down like the trusty Tiger Moth.

According to the SDK Class 3 defines Skid. It's properly defined in your example but I'm not sure this is correctly modelled in FS or if it should read Ski. :-/

Lots of my Vintage Aircraft are not fitted with brakes, which is correct...

I would just like to cheat a little bit, and fit brakes to them to slow them down somewhat after landing!

(Rather like I fit Bendix-King Radios and Autopilots to them)...;)...!

Paul... ;)... ;)... ;)...!

P.S. Joe....by the way; that [Contact point] mod had no effect on braking... :'(...!
P.P.S...rearranged the numbers, and it now works...but violently!...I need to change the [Braking] effect now! Needs a lot of back pressure to stop her "nosing over"!...;)...!

Sorted!....>>> toe_brakes_scale = 0.20// 0.68    //Brake scalar//  I'd try it in  0.02  increments.

That looks like the Alpha freeware SE.5a. I tried it "out of the box" & the skid works well as a brake. It's also very manoeuvrable on the ground. Turns on a sixpence if it's done properly. Stick right back with short bursts of power. I've taxied a lot of taildraggers in RL & it's pretty realistic IMHO.

More than can be said for its performance in the air. Very touchy. :o

You are right, Doug...

It is the Alphasim model. I quite like it.
I decided to download it after watching a recent documentary on the 'Tele (Channel 4?) about the WW I Pilots and their attempts to beat the Hun in the air!
Red Arrows Pilots used replica WW I aircraft
