Need a little help with the commercial pilot chkri

Postby Maverick6901 » Fri Apr 17, 2009 4:55 pm

I'm having trouble passing segment #2 of the Commericial Pilot checkride.

1st Question:  Immediately after the take off at Bremerton, you climb to 5500 ft. Then descend.  Then climb to 6500 ft; then descend again.  So just what is the point of doing these two descends?  I already know that you're supposed to "keep the prop on top" and how to control the RPM and MP. I UNDERSTAND THAT CONCEPT ALREADY - WHY DEMONSTRATE IT TWICE?

2nd Question:  One of the areas that I fail in is that the examiner claims that I did not lower my landing gears on descent.  It can't be during my landing at Harvey airfield, because I have no problems with that part.

I'm guessing she's referring to the "gear down" descent???  Is that the part where you descend 6500 ft to 3500 ft? Well how the hell am I supposed to lower the gears if the plane is descending at 160-170 KIAS?  That's well past the limit of 152 KIAS!

3rd Question:  When you're approaching Harvey airfield at 1400 ft, she says to make left traffic pattern and then descend to 1018 ft when you deem appropriate (I'm basically paraphrasing her words).  So is there a specific moment you're supposed to do that?  During the downwind leg or final approach at Harvey?  Or does it make any difference?

Last Question:  What does KIAS and KIAT stand for?

I've gone through the entire commercial pilot flight lessons and it never explains the acronyms.  I've even looked through the glossary section and it never mentions what these two acronyms stand for. Or have I missed something?  I have many positive things to say about MS FS2004, but the flight lessons by Rod (IMHO) was poorly done!  He should have atleast explained these important terms during the 1st flight lesson in the Barron or during ground school.  And don't get me started on his god-awful cheeseball humour.  His jokes in the ground school lessons are sophormic and childish.

KIAT? It's not in here:

But then again so is KIAS.....

Crash ;)

PS Never did the checkrides so can't help you out with that.

Really? I thought he did just fine with the lessons... That's how I and many others here initially learned to fly....

KIAS = Knots Indicated Air Speed

KTAS = Knots True Air Speed

Lower the gear when you're descending for gear-down descent. If you're over the KIAS limit... then simply decrease power and increase your attitude a little to slow down...

Well I finally managed to land at Harvey Airfield with no dings. :)

Next question is regarding taking off from Harvey Airfield.

Some planes like more flaps for takeoff than others - use enough to create lift, too much creates drag.

As the Romans used to say "Non Illegitimi Carborundum".

The checkrides for FS have ALWAYS been buggy.  Don't worry about it.  Most people (including myself) never finish more than a couple before going on and having fun hopping around the countryside.

Although if you are wanting to fly ILS and such, doing the lessons is very helpful.  Just don't take the checkride, since all it does is simulate a person sitting in the cockpit failing you at every turn.  If you know the materiel, what point is there to taking a flight that will only frustrate and confuse you?
