Prop rotation......

Postby Groundbound1 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 2:20 pm

Not sure if this should be in Aircraft design or not.

I have a few models, that the propellers keep turning for WAY too long after the engines are shut down. Anyone know of a way to increase the drag on them or something to get them to stop turning sooner?

(Ideally, I'd like to "tune" them to stop in sync with the engine sounds.)

That was it! After decreasing the MOI, I can get them to stop just when I want.

On a side note, I discovered that on the model I try this on, I also had to INcrease the "normalized_starter_torque" under the [piston engine] heading to help the engine actually start with the new MOI setting. (just in case someone tries it, and can't figure out why his or her engines fail to start  ;) )

Again, thank you very, VERY, much Commoner, I'd have never thought to look there.

Starting engines is something that I always find to easy in the game, the second you touch the starter it flashes to life, and anyone who's pressed that button(or turned that key)in real life knows that its not usually that easy. maybe decreasing the starter torque might make starting........more realistic? Anyone have any thoughts on this idea, or any better ideas on how to accomplish this?

...mmm...never thought of it that way Rom.......only ever flown in gliders in real life: these not usually having starter buttons :P

May be between us here we have come up with a nice little tweak to get more fun out of our sims........nice one that...

commoner ;)

Any time I have some time to kill I like to change the numbers in the aircraft.cfg and try to predict the results ..or even notice any change in some cases....nice useful way to pass the time IMO  :-[

If I might add a note of caution about the prop MOI - or a fun tweak, depending on your outlook ( ;D ) - is the greater the MOI, the slower the response time when changing power settings. This is very noticeable in my Turbo Beev* - I've got the MOI set at (IIRC) 16, simulating a seriously beefy engine pushing one bloody big prop - which is exactly the case with that plane. ;)

The end result is the engine takes about a second and a half to respond which - when combined with the fact that I got rid of the tailwheel steering - makes for interesting taxi-outs, let me tell you. ;D

*OK, so I shouldn't have called it a 'Turbo-Beev'. Now I'm dealing with a mental image of Jerry Mathers on Prozac... :o

Lol..yes I am with you Staid....whilst I fully appreciate that one single action can affect another....like chopping off your arm can SERIOUSLY curtail the use of your fingers.........I maintain that this tweaking is all good fun and that none of us should in all honesty take FS too seriously  ;D
