Like a jet engine, the turbine engine needs to get "spinning" for startup.. then at a certain RPM, fuel is introduced and ignited.

The P-3 uses compressed (bleed) air to get the turbine "spinning", and the KingAir uses an electric motor to get the turbine spinning..

Thanks Brett I thought I had heard some kind of a starter on a king air once but dismissed it since I thought it had piston engines.

About turbofans and birds: Yes, the compressor and turbine often remain undamaged in a birdstrike, but the engine is still pretty much unuseable. Check this out:

Youtube (and others like it) have tons of videos about testing turbofans for birstrikes and such...

Hello Chums... ;)...!

..back again to Turbine Engine Controls...

Is there anything to be gained, or recommended, (eg; Power and Economy), by backing off slightly the "High Idle/Low Idle" Fuel Levers at altitudes above 5,000 Feet ASL, in a similar way to that used in Piston Prop Aircraft, or should the levers always be pushed fully forward for the duration of the flight?

(More used to the inner-workings of Piston, Carburettor/Fuel Injected Aircraft!...;)...)...!

Hi Fozz...   :)

No..  It doesn't control the fuel/air ratio, like on a piston engine. Just think of the High/Low idle settings like you would the idle adjustment on your motorcycle.

While on the ground, at High idle, a turboprop wants to "go", so you reduce the idle so you don't need to ride the brakes while taxiing.

And while in flight, you want the "idle" to be high, because it reduces the spool-up time when you need to add power. If you have any power applied at all, the idle setting is moot.

Of course, different models with different turbines, are managed differently.. but this applies pretty well to the KingAir and Caravan.

The problem with the Turbine when Taxiing, is the reluctance of the aircraft to move slowly under control of the Throttle, without having to keep braking..... :'(...
...so I get your recommendation to put the levers into "Low Idle" when maneuvering on the ground...and push them forward for full power take-off....;)...!
