If you're bemoaning the decision from FS2002 onward to engage automatically a wing leveler function together the altitude hold, there's away around.

Once you've engaged ALT hold and activated the autopilot, engage and disengage soon after the heading hold. Once this rapid maneuver had been done, the wing leveler will be off, allowing you to bank the plane in ALT holding mode.

PS
Works in FSX as well.

thanks ashaman I will give that a try.  i know there is another way by typing in two lines in the aircraft configuration under auto pilot. that would make it a lot easier for my grandsons. I had it saved on the computer but some how it got erased. i had to reinstall fs9 and then i realized i had lost the fix for the wing levaler. its a lot easier. THANK YOU! Any one else out there know what the two lines are?

You could try this. I found it on another website.

How can I stop the AP to automatically turn on the wing leveler?

Add the following lines in the Autopilot section of the aircraft.cfg file for each airplane you want to change back the AP behavior to the FS2000 way:

use_no_default_bank=1
use_no_default_pitch=1

I remember trying those lines, way back in the days, but I forgot about them soon enough for the simple reason that it's not a global solution (like write it in the FS9.cfg and it's true for every plane), and the need to go through all my planes with a fine comb to apply said lines really made me want to light three cigarettes at the same time back then like today, so I remained faithful to the simple maneuver as above (had a lot of planes in my hangar, way back, and the situation has only worsened with time). ;D
