Re_Install

Postby ivormills » Sat Mar 11, 2006 9:09 am

I am having problems, FS just crashes to the desktop with no warning or just hangs quite often when I go into map mode.
I think a re-install may be in order? If I re-install over the existing installation will I overwrite any of my own scenery/aircraft filesetc.?
I have made a backup of the config file and scenery config file.

Delete you fs9 cfg file. (This will set the sim to default settings).
Plus, you can;t install over what is there. You have to uninstall and the reinstall. It is difficult salavaging peices of panel, gauages, planes etc etc.

Good Morning  Saitek,      Your answer to that uninstall  question was also an answer I've had a nagging feeling about .      It's what happened to some of my add-ons when I had to re-install.
     Thanks for the info,         caveman

Uninstall/Install of FS9 shouldn't affect your addon aircraft but 3rd party scenery will need reactivating from the Scenery Library. This is essentially the same as deleting fs9.cfg & might not fix Ivor's problem as it's most likely caused by 3rd party addons.

If all else fails the only solution might be a full Uninstall/Install. Uninstall FS9, then delete all remaining files manually before doing a fresh Install. I've not done this with FS9 but it's often the quickest way to fix previous versions of FS.

I think when it gets to the crash-to-desktop stage sims have had it. If a few simple tricks don't work (such as deleting the FS9 cfg) there isn't much that can be done. Error messages are much better in that they tell you what the problem is. Unfortunately when a sim crashes back to the desktop the reason is often a mystery.

And just incase you don't know where the cfg is, it is hidden. Check you have hidden files and folders shown and look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9.
