Pilot error or ATC error?

Postby alb469 » Wed Dec 14, 2005 4:31 pm

Was at Santiago Chile intl. and reqested taxi to the active for a north departure. got instructions to use taxiways x,y, z and runway17R and hold short at 33L. Got to 17R and stopped and looked could see nothing from my position heard nothing from ground control, tuned to tower freq heard nothing, turned onto 17R and went about 5 or 6 hunded feet down it when I heard tower gave takeoff clearance to a 737 on 33L! All you could do was head for the grass. My fault, atc fault or is this problem inherent in FS9? If I recall this has happened before but cant remember the details. Has anyone else had this happen?

This is not a common thing but I have had it happen once or twice.
If you have AFCAD check the hold shorts for the runways at that airport somtimes they are not at the correct spot and atc will never give you clearance until you are at the propper hold short for that runway.
Spokane Washington (KGSO)has 1 runway like this it has a long threshhold and the taxiway goes to the end of the threshhold rather than the end of the runway
and the hold short is just behind the start of the actual runway so if you taxi to the end of the taxiway you will never get clearance for that runway unitl you taxi down the threshhold stopping just short of the end of the runway. 8)

That is probably close to what happened. 35L has a turnaround at the end of the runway, but in order for me to get there I would have had to go thru the 737! Why I was not stopped with a hold short  before turning onto 17R we dont know. Guess its a fault in FS9. Out of curiosity will try and duplicate the fault. :o

Was able to duplicate it. Tried leaving from a different gate and this time saw the 737 going down 17R to the turnaround. But again got no instructions from ATC! Wonder if there is any way to correct this other than turning traffic down to zero.

If the hold shorts are not in the correct place they can be moved to the propper place by using AFCAD.
The hold short should be within a few feet of the actual end of the runway if it is not there you will never get clearance.
When I get home I will check it out for you and let you know if that is the problem
But AFCAD is the answer to moving the hold shorts. I fixed KGSO by using it and changed the taxi way to go to the correct place instead of the end of the threshhold.
If you would like a copy of the fixed file for KGSO let me know I would be more than happy to send you a copy. 8)
