I suspect the fuel flow rates of the standard 747 are screwed up. I fully loaded the 747 with fuel and removed all other weight save for 2 pilots. Took off from Brazil, flew at 38,000ft, 0.80 mach, followed the equator east, all the way around the world, and landed at the same airport with about 3000 lbs of fuel left.
If this was accurate, wouldn't someone have just added an auxiliary fuel tank and made an unrefueled around the world trip? Why wait for Rutan to design 2 special planes to do this?
