Ya the problem is if you crank your scenery detail up that much, you're flying into a major city, and if you have the detail low, your PC probably doesn't need to try and deal with a major city in as critical a phase of flight as landing. So if you don't mind the realism being cheated out, you can wait until you land to turn up the scenery complexity so the gates appear, park, fuel up, plan your flight, leave the gate, then turn them back off for more performance, though frankly it won't affect it much.
