Yes, definitely do NOT extract ANYTHING directly to the flight simulator. What I do is create a temp install folder and extract all files to that. Usually 99% of the time they will extract into separate folders corresponding to the ones in FS 2004. You can then cut and paste the contents in their corresponding FS folders.
If you are using Windows XP then an unzip utility is built into the OS. Just open the folders like you would any other folder and XP will take care of the unzipping. You can then cut and paste from there. If you have Windows 98 then you will need to download a utility like Winzip or Winrar. Lots of unzipping utilities out there for free so it won't cost you.
