FS9.cfg duplicate

Hi all....I just noticed that in the folder where the FS9.cfg lives there is a text file of the same name...this when opened is a replica of the FS9.cfg, to the letter....just wondered if any body else has this and is it normal........or how do you think it has happened?

Yup, mine's exactly the same as yours. Must be a backup as I didn't do it. Can't say I've noticed it before as I rarely look in that folder. I created a shortcut to fs9.cfg & pasted it onto my desktop.

PS. Note the Scenery.cfg in there which I assume is another duplicate.

..OK Hagar..thanks...you never know where stuff is on your PC these days..XP is a devil for hiding stuff away in little corners..maybe that's why the uninstalling of FS9 and other stuff is never 100% successful...bits here and there left behind to cause problems when you reinstall...see yah. commoner  ;)

If M$ put everything in one folder think about the fun they would take away from us. I thought every one liked pulling there hair out trying to find all of the little DLL files and do not forget the readme and other .txt files that are scattered to the wind.
But honestly I am kind of glad it does this and just not overwrites them. This way you can always go back

Another thing worth mentioning while I'm about it. As I remarked earlier I don't use WinXP myself & have no knowledge of it. I notice from Commoner's shot that the file extensions are not displayed. This could cause confusion & it's quite possible someone could end up editing fs9.cfg.txt instead of fs9.cfg which would have no effect. One of the first things I do on any machine is to set the Windows Explorer folder options to display all file extensions. This might be slightly different in WinXP but I'm sure it must have similar options the ones I'm used to. This is the View option menu from Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options.


Disable the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option (as in the above shot) for those file extensions to display. Click the "Like current folder " button to make all folders display in the same way. This is how mine looks. See the difference? Now there can be no confusion.

PS. Once you've identified fs9.cfg you can create a shortcut to it & paste it to your desktop. This saves hunting around for it every time you wish to edit it. Doing these little tweaks will only take a few moments but save so much time & frustration in the future.

I think it's generated whenever you get an error. It creates a backup of the config file and also creates a dxdiag.xml.

One thing I noticed is that it may also create a scenery.cfg file which is also located in the root FS directory. This creates two scenery conifg files and I delete the one outside of the root directory as required.

Hagar's suggestion to view file extensions is a good one.

Hagar..I take your point about file extensions but if you look again at my pic it is quite clear which is the cfg and which is the text also the bin and the XML document too for that matter...its printed there for all to SEE...eh?    BTW...I do now have shortcuts to the FS9.cfg and also to the Main FS9 folder on my desktop thanks for the tip..commoner

As always it's a matter of preference. Everyone works in their own way. From your shot it occurred to me that anyone not used to this lark might quite naturally think this is the fs9.CFG they're looking for.


All this is diifficult enough to understand when you're just starting out. I've met plenty of experienced simmers completely unaware that those options can be changed to suit your own preferences. I'm simply trying to make things a little easier for everyone.
