ATC Voice

All of a sudden I have no ATC voice. I get the written messages but, no voice. I have checked all my settings , they indicate that the voice is turned on.
It may be something with a computer setting since I have the same problem on both FS9 and FS2002.
Any ideas on how I can trouble shoot this?
I can hear the aircraft engines, elevators etc. But not ATC.

My guess is, if you look in settings...ATC, you have either unchecked 'use a pilot voice' or the pilot voice box has not got a voice selected in it.

Hi Chief,

It could also be a corrupted voice pack (Sounds\USEnglishBig.gvp) or the Audio CODECs. I don't know how to trouble shoot this to decide which one it might be.

Replacing the voice pack means getting it from one of your FS CD's.

If it's the Audio CODECs, you'll have to uninstall then reinstall from a Windows CD. If you need more details, go to the Microsoft website, locate the Knowledge Base and search for "Q177252". The title of this article is "Flight Simulator: No Instructor, Pilot or ATC Voices ......". With some luck, the instructions will apply to your system.

The answer Rollerball gave is a lot easier to fix. Hope he's right.

you can take a look in the "sound" screen and see if the ATC slider is turned up

i don't know if you already did that, but it's always worth checking out

I have done all off the above, except the unistall/ reinstall, because like I said the problem is the same in both FS9 and FS2002. There should be no connection right?
Any other ideas?

Try opening a sound file in either FS2004 or fs2002 to see if you can hear any of them and mke sure you do not have a folder within a folder. This can happen if you unzip a file striaght into FS it will make a new folder within the old folder and then you have a problem.
The only other thing would be you have hit the Q key and shut off all sound.
If none of the above are true then try reinstalling the useenglishbig.gvp file from disk one I think it is in the gameone cab file but not sure.

When you said you've tried everything except the uninstall/reinstall, were you referring to the Audio CODECs?

If so, the CODECs are a part of the Windows OS and will affect both versions of FS.

Thanks for all the advice, I did a complete uninstall/reinstall for FS2002 and still no ATC voice.
Jerry what do you mean by Audio Codecs are they in the FS program?  What I found out last night was that I have some missing files in DirectX 9.c, could that be whats cauing my ATC problem?
I replied to another DirectX post on here asking how to resolve my DirectX problem seems like reinstalling it does not replace the missing files.

The Audio CODECs are not a part of FS. They are part of the Windows Operating System. I know very little about them, except reinstalling them solved my sound problem about two years ago.

As I stated in my earlier post:

I don't know how to advise you any further. The way you do this will depend on which Operating System you have. That's why I suggested starting with the Microsoft Knowledge Base. You will also need the original Windows CDs to do an installation.

I can't guarantee that this will solve your ATC problem. Also, I don't know if DirectX could be causing the problem.

I did visit the Microsoft knowledge site you sugessted, I will look agian. My problem is that no CDs came with my system everything was preloaded. I have a Sony Vaio PCV- RS420. I am running Win XP

You should be able to contact Tech Support from the company who manufactured your PC. If you didn't recieve a CD then the files to restore your codecs are on your hard drive but someone will have to talk you through reinstalling them.

It's common on many prepackaged systems. The restore files are usually kept in a partition on your HD. You could probably even restore them yourself but I'll bet that the only option you can access without someone at the company talking you through, would be a complete restore (restore the computer to the state it was in when you unpacked it with all added files lost).

Personally I wouldn't touch one like those but I work on PCs for a living so it's easy to build my own to my liking. All PC techs hate the package systems. They are extremely proprietary so every manufacturer has their own little tricks. Some even use proprietary hardware so only the company who built the system can sell you replacement or upgrade parts.

Matt after reading your reply , I started looking throught my computer papers. You are right I do have what is called the "recovery" on my hard disk and yes after reading the procedures I would lose all the data I have. I think I better find me a tech that knows what he/she is doing to fix this mess.
