Madcat,

If you have a GA type airport near you...... they might have a "pilot shop" of some sort there.  Take a trip and visit the place.  Take your camera while you are at it.... likely get some good real world aviation shots  ;).

Almost 100% for sure you will find that the pilot shop has an assortment of charts and books for real world pilots.  There is a small booklet that is put out about every three months by the US DOT / FAA that is called "Terminal Procedures".  They are sold by the geographic area they cover....... and there are are 24 of them to cover the whole continental USA, for example.

They include Airport Diagrams, ILS Approaches, Standard Terminal Arrivals, and Departure Procedures.  This is the "as real as it gets" kind of stuff  ;).

If you have one of these booklets that is current...... at the most, the airport diagram it has in it will be no more than about 3 months out of date to the "real thing".

You might also see if you know any real pilots.  Since these things have to be bought (so that they are current) about every three months....... they likely have an outdated one that they might give you.

I know that the pilot shop at my local airport (KASH....Boiere Field Nashua, NH) has a web site.  Do a search for "Wings Pilot Shop".  I think that sell these charts online too.  I would expect that there are many  other online options too.

Hope this helps.

best,

.................john

do they have thoes book things for Canadian airports as well? We are partially governed by the FAA but mostly by Transport Canada and NAV Canada.

doucey,

I would ASSUME that Canada has the equivalent agency....... but I don't know that for sure.  I can't imagine that there are NOT the equivalent books for Canada.
