Search the web for tutorials specific to the editing program you are using, there are many out there (tutorials that is).

If you are not using a program that supports layers then you have to paint them on yourself.

There are some good tutes here- http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/

Joe

Thanks, some of the tutorials were helpful but they didnt have anything that helps in GIMP, as far as the sheet metal and rivet thing.

I Googled "gimp tutorial" and received 11.7 million returns. Surely one of them can help you faster than I can teach you through a forum.

cheers,
Joe

PS. I don't intend to come across as abrupt, but we are not re-inventing the wheel. There is tons of info out there to help you.

[edit[
the top return mentioned "layer manipulation" which is what you need to learn if you want to produce quality repaints. If you cannot work with layers you will end up pounding your head on the wall as you repaint the same pixels over and over.

Its been a while since i did any repaints but a decent paintkit is a great start. Honest, its the best way to really get some super detail into your repaints. Its the best way to learn all about layers and how to use them.

I note some PMDG products in your sig. Check there paintkits. They are multi-layerd iirc.

I learned a hell of a lot by painting the CLS 747. The paintkit was truly fantastic and once id cracked how to manage alphas i was churning them out at quite a rate!

Looking at the 'dirt layers' individually its easy to replicate, use the same techniques to 'weather' an aircraft more or even less..i found it the fastest way to learn rather than trying to create things i had no idea about!!

For a freeware paintkit + model may i suggest the tinmouse 737, it really is superb!!

Heres an example of some of the effects attainable with the fabulous paintkit.....

And the finished article....

All my own work on the repaint side. 8-)

I don't know about what you're looking for, but here's a unique effect I've done that I don't believe has ever been uploaded to simviation before.
