CPU Overclocking questions...

Postby F35LightningII » Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:45 pm

These are my questions:

1) I've heard that the i7-990X is 100% safe to overclock. Is the i7-970 just as safe?

2) Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide on how to overclock an i7?

Although this may seem like a fairly straightforward question, this will be difficult to answer.

I am an AMD guy, and I really can't be too much help with your i7, but the reason I decided to say anything about this is the way you ask this question.

Some general information can and probably will be given, but a lot of the ability lies in the PSU, the type of cooling you'll use, the motherboard's max H/T link speed, all kinds of things. The best thing to do, if you haven't already, is read up online about others having already done this.

I'm sure someone will be more than happy to walk you through, but having a good understanding of what is happening when someone tells you to change something can really help you goet the most out of your OC.

There are a lot of folks in these forums that are very helpful, and will chip in any kind of experiences they've had.

I really dig what intel did with these i7s and hope you get the best of it! Do yourself a favor, though. Read as much as you can stand, because it really does help to have a solid understanding of how OCing works.

Hope this has been some kind of help...

google i7 920 overclocking guide, there are a lot of guides out there.

The only real overclocking difference between a 920 and the 970 is you can use a higher BCLK and CPU ratio overclocking the 970.

As long as you have a decent motherboard that supports overclocking a decent aftermarket HSF (CPU heatsink/fan assembly) and a case that has good airflow then it is completely safe to OC a 970 as long as you follow the guides and do not apply to much voltage, the guides will tell you what is safe.
