Try the FS2004 forum here first.

Before you think you need to get 'as real as it gets', you'd need to understand two things:

1. High FPS is a myth, meaning that you don't need 100 FPS in Flight Sim.
2. Generally your (or any ones) hardware will be the bottleneck.

I have a similar system to yours and mine runs really sweet but it's been a very long period of trial and error and even when I thought I had it nailed Michael Greenblatt of FS-GS went into my sim and tweaked it to run even better.

Basically your computer and everything on it or connected to it compares to a car  ... you need to take the car to the garage sometimes for maintenance. Same with a computer. Defrags, registry checks, cleanups, system boosts ... all can be done but need to be done carefully and correctly. If not you can really ruin your system and need to reinstall everything ...

And I'm not even talking about overclocking ... which you should be more careful about because it can physically damage your system and reinstalling the software does not help in that case. You'd need new hardware. Overclocking really is a last resort IMO ... but I also understand that some people think it's a sport ;D

There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum who will give out very good advise. Browse through these parts of the forum and look for knowledgable advise. Make sure you understand what is being said in the post and don't try it yourself if you're not 100% convinced it will work for you.

Another piece of valuable advise, which is very obvious but very rarely done correctly: BACKUP BEFORE EXPERIMENTING!!

If you need anything just send me a PM  ;)

a1,

Do the stuff mentioned by Nick in the following thread EXACTLY as he says and you'll be VERY happy.

Then from my point of view you are mostly into payware additions to get it looking really good, with a few notable freeware items like FlyTampa's Griswold Boston Logan 2.1 combined with the Aerosoft FREE AES package (see the recent payware forum).

So you are saying that i should upgrade and do stuff to the computer not to FS? Well i don't have the cash to up grade and add stuff to it now so any help on the cfg. will have to do. :)

The tweaks that Nick N put together worked really well I would give them a shot first, trust me even if you do the registry updates and turn of certain services windows will run alot better and FS will too.

But I also know there really isn't no silver bullet when it comes to enhancing FS, and sometimes a system upgrade is what is really needed. 1GB Mem is up next for my rig along with an nvidia 7900 512mb vid card.(when some cash rolls in)

... make sure the RIG is up to all that payware FIRST.

Good call John! I was looking for that tread but I couldn't find it! Thanks!

A1: I don't think that John is necessarily talking about upgrading. I've seen your shots and they are already very good. But good graphic quality does generally equal poor sim performance and the other way around. The trick is to have your computer give all it has to Flight Simulator and not to anything else while you're flying. IMO having a smooth running and well maintained system
is essential to smooth simming.

If you'd take care of the machine first by following Nick's tips and then take a look at your sim, you would already see the difference.

Yes there is ... it is called FS-GS

I would suggest you'd take care of the rig first ...

A bunch of computers, a crap load of monitors, tons of MDF & and understanding wife!

She is really pretty understanding, especially since she is letting me use the 60" dlp projection for the primary display

Please do not use any PC tweaking tools! Although TweakXP is nice and free (well .. shareware) these kinds of tools generally are a waste of money as there's is nothing that they can do that you can't do yourself by tweaking the registry ... ::)

And by tweaking the registry you are in control of what to do to the registry and learn from it at the same time ;)
