XP not shutting down

Postby born_2_fly » Fri Jun 30, 2006 10:47 am

Heya guys,

Ive been having trouble with XP shutting down, its happened ever since I've had my new rig. Its fine if I boot up and dont touch anything, but when I close background programmes down to free up stuff for FS, after that it wont shut down. At first I thought it was to do with systra.exe, and for a few times, that worked, but its started again. even with that running. Could you guys have a guess at whats causing it so that I can shut down properly.

Cheera,
Alex

I'm thinking spyware. I recently had a problem where I couldn't open or close any programs, let alone open my start bar. Booted in Vista and got it fixed (found the program directory and deleted it). Anyway since you can open up stuff, just grap Adaware (preferably Webroot's SpySweeper) and do a few sweeps. Also get rid of any suspicious programs running in the background.

Cheers

I used to have a similar problem. A problem that was solved when I purged my system of Norton. ;D

lmao ditto ctjoyce.. ;D Mcafee makes great AntiV ware, but lousy tools, Norton, makes wonderfull sys tools but lousy AntiV ware... go figure!  8)
As for XP, good advice  here.  If, your spyware scans are clean you might try a selective bootup process till you find the offending bugger, then send it to the  vaporware bin.  ;)

I already have Mcafee Installed, And I don't think it's spyware, as if I boot up normally, I can shut down. Its only when I close certain programmes running in the background that the problem occurs. Also, I am very careful about my computer on the net. I have all Mcafee programmes installed, except for Spyware as it isn't part of the Security Centre. But I do have Firewall (set to tight security), Privacy service (not entirely sure what it does but always have it running when on the net) and Virus scan. However, due to it opening on start up (and not being able to shut it doen through Task manager) I do not have McShield.exe running, as I find its pretty resource heavy. Does Mcafee not detect spyware if you dont have the specialist programme installed?

Some (but not all) of the main programmes I shut down usually are:
MSKSrvr.exe
McVSE.exe
McTskshd.exe
Mcdetect.exe
mcvsshld.exe
MASAlert.exe

I think there are a few more but I'm not infront of my computer right now, so could not tell you in depth. Would It make sense for me to have 2 user accounts, one for flightsimming, and one for internet, both having different start up programmes? The only thing is. For some reason, if CCC isnt running on startup, my FS has no AA, so thats a bit annoying. Anyway,

Cheers,

Alex

I was merely stating that with careful use, you won't pick up viruses with 99% of freeware packages, which has worked for me very well for the past few years.  ;)

No worries, sorry my post wasnt meant to be directed at you in a harsh way, sorry if it seemed like that. And i wouldnt worry, if I hadn't got a Dell (OK, so shoot me) I would still be using AVG Free, Adaware, and most of the other free stuff out there! I know exactly how you feel, and trust me, as soon as my subscription expires, I'll be going back to what I know! Freeware all the way!

I use AVG Free now. As far as I can tell it just sits there and does nothing. It doesn't do a scan inless I ask it to. It doesn't download updates intill I tell it to. In all it's perfect and well behaved. ;D

Whats more with it runnng my computer doesn't take the best part of a week to shut down. :)

Im thinking your shutting down a process that Windows doesn't realize you already shut down, this is the reason Windows won't turn off it is trying to kill that process that is already shut down.
Or you have a process shut down that another requires itself to terminate and Windows can't find it.

I have done this before you can wait hours and the pc won't shut down and you need to do it the hard way and it was due to what I stated above. Im trying to remember what process it was that was giving me the issue.

What are you using or doing to terminate processes?
And if your just shutting stuff down for performance reasons give FSAutoStart a try, it will terminate and then restart when your done doing what your doing ;)

Also you aren't shutting off explorer are you?

Im Not shutting of explorer.

For some reason, my computers started behaving now, and shut down 3-4 times when I asked it, even though I shut down the programmes I usually do. I've been using Task manager to stop the programmes, but realized that the simplest thing to do now is just to change the settings for start up in msconfig. So that I dont have to shut everything down, also, it's been closing down some programmes that I wasnt to sure about but apparently aren't needed, so thats freed up more space. FS is running well now, and so is my computer. Cheers guys!
All the best..

Alex
