WinZip

Postby rootbeer » Sun Apr 23, 2006 7:37 am

I downloaded WinZip 7.0 (I think it's 7.0) several months ago and had been using it sparingly until purchasing FS2004 last week. Then my use of it went into overdrive. I was using it today when a window pops up and tells me the evaluation period has expired, that I have used WinZip for 22 days and unzipped something like 430+ files. Question: Do I have to pony up the bucks to keep using it? Are they going to charge me a per-unzip charge until I pay them? If I don't pay them, am I going to Devil's Island? Should I learn how to make a raft out of coconuts and burlap bags?

I suspect you have WinZip 10.0 which is the latest version. The trial version of WinZip 7.0 has no time limit.

Well, I tried to be cute and download it again, assumably giving myself another 21 days and I did see v10.0 offered at the site I hit. I downloaded it but haven't used it yet. I am familair with the one I got back in November or October, I guess it was. I see v10.0 offers CD/DVD burning; the one I have does not or I haven't found that capability yet. I need to turn WMV files into DVD-ready files.

Oh... Well, I just guessed at putting it here. A mod will move it soon enough...

But I am...

I'll try anything to save a buck for later spending on guns, women, upgrades or more software.

Get this it is free, works better than Winzip and handles every type file imaginable.

http://www.izarc.org/

But if you wanted to go through the hassle you could get your Winzip use back by deleting all remaining files and clearing the registry of any Winzip enteries.(this is how they know you have already tried it ;) ) Then reinstall.

Before someone calls me a hacker or pirate, please note that Im not giving instruction on how to modify the software. And it isn't illegal in anyway to clean unnecessary files from your pc.

WinRAR is horrible.  I don't know why anyone uses that blasted format, and it has one of the worst GUIs I've seen.  And then they have the gall to ask for money! :P ExtractNow from Download.com does the trick for most archives.

the cool thing about winrar is that you can quickly unzip a huge number of zip or rar files in one batch.  Most wares large come in hundereds of small rar files before they are made into bigger ones for use in torrents etc. this allows downloads off often unreliable IRC networks to be ripaired instead of having to download the whole thing again.  that some of my freinds use win rar  ;)

If you have WinXP there is no need for a separate 3rd party utility like WinZip, WinRar or anything else. The onboard Compressed Folders utility is all you need to extract zipfiles containing FS addons. http://www.mhuffman.com/notes/zip/zip.html

  • WinRAR
    • Still ugly
    • Still not free
  • ExtractNow
    • Free
    • Small
    • Simple, nice effective GUI
    • Doesn't try to be the end all solution

Tired of all these applications that have 100 useless features, but don't do the one thing you need them to do.  Sort of like hardware with with equally useless features.  Does anything not have a clock anymore?  I think I saw a joystick that even told the time. ::) Like Hagar said, XP handles zip files by default.   Though surely no one could have overseen that.  Hopefully...

I'd still rather not put up with the hassle.  Especially when there are free alternatives.
