PC Turned Off or Unplugged

Please tell me. What happens when a computer is turned off using the software or when it is unplugged?  When I turn off my computer does the networking communication continue? Do all  events such as virus scanning, spyware scanning, etc. which  are lenghty processes and normally scheduled to take place early in the morning continue to take effect?  I know that e-mail remains enabled. If the PC is unplugged or the I/O switch is turned off from the back, does anything changed?

The funny thing I have noticed lately is that when I un-plug my vacuum cleaner it suddenly stops sucking....
..and when I turn the ignition switch to off on my motor-bike it suddenly stops making a noise...

Sorry if I confused you guys. I was talking about PCs.  But it's nice to know that when you unplug your vacuum cleaner it stops making noise and so does your motor bike. I'm not sure about divorce. I haven't had one lately.

In short when you turn it OFF it soes not do anything besides sit there and take up space, sure the clock still runs and on some the network card may remain active for a remote wakeup call from the main server (mainly in offices/etc..)

When you unplug it the bios clock will still be run on a battery for an undetermined amount of time..

Not sure if this helps any but that is my take on the situation..

When your computer is off, (shut down via's windows), the CPU shus down. The clock still runs, but thats off a battery on the mobo or integrated into a CMOS chip. without a CPU, a computer is essentially a pile of silicon.

Your computer probably doesn't have a remote wakecall capability.

When you computer is off, nothing runs, not antivirus, not spyware, not schedualed processes/tasks. Nothing. Its like a car with its engine turned off. It won't go anywhere.

To put it simply for u bubblehead...

Imagine ureself running (the computer + software)

Then imagine a brick wall appearing a few centimetres away from your face.. (the power switch)...

Well what was said above and a side notw, on some/all motherboards if not unluged the PSU supplys small amounds of power to the system to run the clock etc. Thats why you ulways switch off/unplug the PSU directly before messing with components or you could get fryage.

Any ATX based computer has wake-on-lan as long as there is enough power on the standby (500mA-1A@5v). you just need to turn it on

ATX isn't 'hard switched' anymore (that means that there isn't a 220v cable going from the PSU to the power switch) so it needs power on the board to detect the power switch contact impulse (which in emergencies can be done with screwdrivers, paperclips and any other thing that is small enough to fit between the pins and is conductive)
