My upcoming Cockpit

Postby Whimpy » Mon Aug 11, 2008 4:36 pm

Hey guys, have been on this forum, from the beginning.. But now i decided that i will build my own cockpit.

Had the concept in my head for years, but now im gonna do something about it. Have planned and prepared for severel months and it will be very special in many ways.

Since i enjoy flying big jets mainly, i will focus on Big Jets instruments, but i also enjoy figher jets, props and old veteran WWII style planes. So it is very hard too find the middle way. So i tried too imagine a system, that could work for all planes.

Main system will be for Big Jets, then i will add some features for other types of aircraft.
I will post pictures, when im finished my design for the complete cockpit.

Here is the Big Jet concept, keep in mind, that this is far from done

Welcome to the madness, Whimpy.  Your admission of having a problem (wanting to build a simpit) is the fist step to........... total insanity and bankruptcy!!!!!   ;)

I'm sure that you'll find a lo of help here; there are a lot of good minds working on the same kinds of ideas hanging out here.

The best part I hear in your comments is the "been reading and planning a long time" and the "year and a half" idea.  Shows that you realize this is not the place for instant gratification.... or an easy route to go.

best,

I think i was born insane, however the bankruptcy is getting closer  ;D
Thats why im gonna make most of the parts myself. Saving money and increase the project length = less bored  :)

I will soon post some pictures, when im getting some progress with the electronics.

I got the first mail with some electronics part today, so i can finally begin too weld and test.

Im Starting with the hardest part.. The Autopilot. Not fully decided what design i wanna use, but think i will use a modern Boeing style autopilot. However, i will get alot of trouble too get this working, because i need the display (7 segment) too fit with the ingame numbers. Expect that the autopilot will be the biggest time killer. Also the biggest problem for me too plan and get info about on the

Im finally beginning too get the most needed parts for the autopilot module. Its seems that im problaly can get it done within a few weeks. So im already beginning too plan the next part too complete. The controls.

Ive using control cards from Opencockpit and some other parts too control all parts in the cockpit. Wasnt my plan, but otherwise i wont ever get it finished and my time have been decreased :-(

However still many hours before i can say it is finish, but ive got some time the next 3 weeks, so my goal is its finished and tested at that time.

The AP is Airbus style, was planning for boeing 737 style, but changed my mind. Im beginning with a simple AP, with only few buttons. Its not a complete copy, since ive changed it abit.

Some Opencockpit parts and other "trash" i will use for the cockpit

The display background will be black, the front will be sort of gray. And all the Leds wil be yellow (Witch will be main color lightning in the cockpit)

And a fantastic powersuply for labs.. It got 3 outputs, where one of them is 5v for USB, that are very usefull for cockpit builders.

If anyone got questions, suggestions, critics or anything else, are most welcome :-)
