Tru120 power connector question

I am installing a TRU120 on my i7 940 with a P6T deluxe MOBO. My question is, my MOBO's CPU fan connection is a 4 pin and my TRu's fan is a 3, is it OK to hook it to the 4 pin?

The only difference is there will be less speed control .. it will still run fine

be sure to fit the plug correctly.. it should only go on one way

If you wish to change the fan to one that is specific to the board and have better control over the fan speed then you need to get a 120MM PWM (4pin) fan and replace the one on the TR120 with it

The fan came with the HS as a kit combo. I wonder why they dont include the fan with the power management pin also? Man that sucker is big! So far everything is going fine putting it together. I am taking my time with it

I did not order that unit.. I had them ship me the bracket for my original 120 which I had purchased the fan for (the originals did not come with any fan) so I was unaware for the lack of PWM support until recently.

I did shoot off an email the TR but did not get anything back.. I told them no x58 motherboard has a 3 pin CPU connector and I was quite surprised to see they used that fan.


You shoud not have any problems hitting 4GHz on the 940 but do be aware the only temp monitor software able to read i7 correctly right now is the beta version of Realtemp... v2.90 or above

The i7 has a TJMAX of 100c so your max temp under a load test wants to be 80c or less

it was not a 4 pin fan so it can't be adjusted.

Nick, great information.

Like jwenham, I am putting the finishing touches on my i7 920 build (the last bit, 6gb of the fast Mushkin RAM, should be delivered this afternoon). I also got the newer TRUE 120 that comes with the three wire fan. When I'm ready to OC, I'll replace that fan.

May I ask which PWM fan you are using?

I dont remember.. let me see if I can find the make specs on it

I do know it is a 120mm PWM 2500RPM @ about 50-80CFM.. somewhere in there

I know I got it at Frozen CPU

Time to go install the memory. It's been four hours since it was delivered after sitting in a UPS truck all day at -15C (5F). Should be warmed up now. :-)

I find that amusing since the Vendetta 2's come with the fans that have a 4 pin connector and they are saying that they are rare .
