Not everyone "plays" FS-X though ;-) At the current time I'd rather have a 3ghz dual, than a 2.4ghz quad. I do a fair bit of heavy processing, but my 2.7ghz is fast enough, and from I've seen quad support in gaming isn't quite up there yet. Apart from FS-X and Supreme Commander. I think UT 3 uses quad, but I still get 60fps contant everything maxed out, no juddering..

being this is a Flight sim forum, I think the primary use of that processor would be for FSX

I dont see anyone buying such as system to run FS9

In case anyone is interested, here is the equation for Intel overclocking, DDR2 or DDR3

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3208&p=8

Start there and follow the guide as it will show you what you are doing and how to configure that with FSB/STRAP/CAS/MEMSPEED

They do not get into DDR3 speeds however if you have a good grasp on math, you can do as I do and extrapolate for the DDR3 memory speed.

Been using that for close to a year... was nice of AnandTech to finally post a easy to follow guide for people to use.

You are right. I will have my eyes set on FSX as soon as my dad buys it. Will run FPS and FS9 until that time. So you agree with the QX9650 Nick? :)

That X means big bucks for a multiplier... if your not going to be doing any serious overclocking the multiplier being available wont do you any good and therefore part of the cost you are putting out is to have that access.

Thats a 1000 bucks for 3GHz @ 1333FSB, and to use 1333 FSB you also have to manually set that up.. its not going to plug in and go that FSB by itself in sync with the memory

no such thing as plug-n-go

So yes, the FSB and the multiplier is nice, but if your not going to buy memory that uses that speed and clock it right, thats a lot of money for a speed you can get very easy by clocking a Q6600, but again, with a Q6600 that means you DO have to clock to hit the speed.

If you clock, you need the right heatsink because the one that comes in the Intel box is a joke

In any case.. the QX9650 is a good processor and it will serve you very well, and, if you do wish to play with a clock later or as time goes by it will allow you a much, much better range of settings to work with, and, out of the box and set up right it will outdo the Q6600 without clocking. But you will still need to set up the memory and the BIOS right none the less

This is mostly for future stuff so I will definatly look into clocking the QX9650 when i understand more of it. This is basicly expanding my knowledge. ;)

If done right you will have no problem hitting 4gigs on it and because its a 45 proc it will not need anywhere near the voltage so cooling will be easier..

I had mine at 4.5gig, no problem

Thanks.

So explain how to install the QX9650. I understand it is just no plugging in a using it. I heard something of the BIOS? :-?
