cfg question

Postby Dan Morera » Fri Sep 21, 2007 2:30 pm

Let me try to explain this, my graphics are looking great right now, but there's something that bugs me a bit.

You know when you are flying and go to the spot view, you get those nice textures but up ahead and to the sides it is still a little blurry and as you move forward then what was a little blurry before becomes nice and crisp. Also your autogen starts poping up at a certain distance.

The question is, what parameter on my cfg is the one that orders fs9 to make the textures crisp at X distance? and what tell my auto gen (building and trees) to show up at x distance?

The Idea is that if I can get the change to happen farther ahead it will look smoother for me. This is for FS9 by the way.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

You can put all the sliders up to full but you must remember flight sim games have to render the whole world as you travel along, you'll never get it perfect.

The only thing that controls autogen in FS9 is the slider. With the FS9.1 patch, autogen is not shown way out in the distance as far as it is shown before the patch. One of the problems with FS9 (unpatched) is it does not remove autogen at all and fills up the memory to the point of slowing the game. The 9.1 patch fixes that but in doing so it makes autogen dissapear in the distance faster.

I assume you are running with the FS9.1 patch because that is also important too. Right click FS9.exe and select properties and see under the version its listed as 9.1 and not 9.0

If it does not appear till you are close to it, then I suspect the system may be busy because autogen takes a lower priority to other things and if you have a buch of stuff runnin in the background that will cause those symptoms along with blurred textures.

As for terrain and how far out it displays, these are the max settings:

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000
TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21
TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5
TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.5
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.0
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4

The problem may be your computer is not allowing the needed CPU cycles or it is bogged down with junk. Check out NickN's Windows XP and system optimizing thread which just about everyone around here has done, includiong meself:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... ;start=0#5

The hard drive being slow or fragmented can also make terrain textures blurred cause the system cant load and display them fast enough. Make sure INDEXING SERVICES is disabled cause that service is only needed if you are a file server and need indexes built for network searches. Having that enabled slows down hard disks. I use O&O Defrag 8.5 as NickN instructed for defrags and follow that list to the LETTER.

MY COMPUTER, right click your C drive. UNCHECK "allow indexing services to index this disk"... when the box appears select YES for ALL SUB FOLDERS AND FILEs.. the process will take a while. once complete repeat the same process for all the hard drives listed in MY COMPUTER. If it stops for some reason, click either continue or ignore for ONLY the file it stops for so it will continue the process. Sometimes it will find files it can not access, just hit Ignore and let it continue but I would clean out the PREFETCH folder in C:\Windows\Prefetch before running that scan and also dump all the temp files NickN posted, and dump the recycle bin too.

Last but not least is the Windows Startup files. Check by clicking START - RUN, type in the box MSCONFIG and hit OK. Click the STARTUP tab. I only have 8 items on that list and all are needed, none cause memory to be eaten or CPU to be bogged down. You can also check your processes list. CTRL-ALT-DEL and when the task manager appears, check how many processes are running. I only have 30. Some people just dont realize how much background junk their system is running. NickN's thread and then cleaning up the startup system will fix all that for maximum game resources.

Thank you guys and sorry it so long to reply. I followed the instructions and still looks the same, I believe my limitation is related to my cpu, I got a Pentium D 3.00ghz (2cpus) and I don't think it can handle my 3gbs of ram and my 8800gts 320mb.

I really appreciate your help  :)
Thank you again
