X2 3800+ (overclocked by 15%, could that be the problem?)

...LOL... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

The words "Over-clock" and "Spontaneous Combustion" have a similar ring to them!... ;D...!

I cant believe I hit the delete button on a good size response..

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PUT A "ARE YOU SURE" FLAG INTO THE DELETE POST BUTTON?

Thanks

An overclock can be you best friend, if it is done right and if it is monitored correctly.

I will cut to the chase, the CPU being overclocked is not going to cause the video corruption. It will crash the system. What is being seen is either the video card overheating (check the cooler for plugged up dust) the PSU too low in power, corrupt drivers or a defective video card.

I run a 35% overclock on a air cooled QX6700 and a 69% overclock on a phase change cooled QX6700

I run a 8800GTX at 700-725core, 2150-200memory and 7100 shader clock, better than a ULTRA and is cooled on air using this HSF: http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main ... 3-plus.htm

Please, even Phil Taylor has expressed in his blog that overclocking for FSX is a good thing, especially the memory and FSB. I am sure he even does it himself.

Nothing wrong with overclocking. What goes wrong is the user does not know what they are doing and does not monitor the temp or the current drop.

I am forever curious...

Surely, in the age of competitiveness and reputation amongst manufacturers, if their product was capable of operating successfully, and could be guaranteed not to fail during its normal operating life, they would already design, and supply the product to run at its maximum speed without a need to over-clock it, and risk damaging the product and/or it's reputation!

Example:
If I want my motorcycle to go faster and be reliable for its working life, I purchase a motorcycle with a larger, more powerful engine...
...NOT supercharge my existing one...!

Paul...I love it when things don't go wrong!...;)...!

Bjorn put me right on this one..apparently it is right...

It is half the speed that some of the manufacturers quote....so your 1600 is correct reading at 800...for some reason!...;)...!

(Something to do with two operations per cycle).

DON'T OVERCLOCK it up to 1600!!!!

Paul... 8-)...!

Thanks for that, i though it was strange that it was reading under 800 8-)

At least I haven't tried to OC to 1600Mhz, I'm pretty sure that would have killed my PSU ;)

Think I'll try everything that John mentioned, hopefully that will work :)

If not, I guess it's yet another lengthy phonecall to India to get Microsoft to sort it out (tried twice already, still no luck - 3rd time lucky maybe ;))

Going from 792 to 800 will not kill your PSU

Nick, I meant OC'ing so the PC read 1600Mhz (so 3200Mhz in reality) - I guess that would've killed it  ;D

This only happens with MSFS, all other games work fine. 3dMark05 gives a score of just over 10,000 (10,158 I think).
PC Mark gives around 3,500

PSU Model:

No brand name I can recognize - bought pre-made from MESH PCs, so probably some cheap make. It does say "Eco Smart" and "High Quality Evolution Commitment". Has the code: HEC-550TD-PTE on it. Says support for Intel P4 LGA 775- Intel ATX Support. This is ok still for an AMD system isn't it?

AC input: 230V 50Hz 7A

D.C Output: +3.3V      +5V      +12V1     +12V2      -12V        +5Vsb

Max A:           30A       38A       18A         17A          0.3A          2A

+5V&+3.3V combined 185W

Total Output: 550W

I will look at the PSU and post back

If you are not seeing this corruption in other games and 3Dmark runs fine then I have go with a corruption of some type in the FS9 install or possibly elements of Dx9 that FS9 uses, but given 3Dmark runs without issue, I would have to place a Dx9 issue on the low chart.

Is this a clean FS9 install with no add-ons?

Look at the disk and make sure its not scratched up

do you recall if the video card takes 1 or 2 power inputs?

If its only one, you may be borderline on that 12v rail

Yeah, it's a clean FS9 install, no add-ons

The disk is... well....... not in great condition, after a few years of being thrown around ;)

The card takes one 4-pin Molex to single 6-pin PCI Express power adapter (that's straight form the manual).

Thanks,
Celtman

Some other strange things are happening now..... I'm getting the following error when loading the FSRepaint Demo.

Image

Also, whenever windows is booted up and I log on, I get a wincm.exe(I think) error, saying it cannot be found. Perhaps this problem needs a new XP install?

Thanks,
