Gigabyte 7900GS gets 10k in 3Dmark'05

I ran 3Dmark'05 at the overclock settings coolbits recommended and this is what it produced on my new Gigabyte GV-NX79G256DP-RH 7900GS 256mb video card.



I was pretty happy to break the 10k barrier.

I had to clock up my CPU (2.2 to 2.5) to get to 8140 (my best 06 score) but have never tried to OC the GPU

video card clocking nets you more than any other type of clock...

Video card (core and memory)

in that order of performance gain in 3D

If you bring the core and memory speed up by as little as 20-30MHz you would be amazed at the results and typically that type of increas is not a problem.

Some cards can take clocking and others cant. It is best to review the O/C forums to see what the card is doing before attempting and also, make sure you monitor temps when testing 3D benchmarks. The NV panel has a monitor tool that will show temps over a period of time.

Mine is a 3Dmark '05 score , so your's is probably better than mine anyway, I thought you were testing '05.

I have never overclocked my graphics board before but installed the Coolbit patch last night and uped my 06 score by 600 points. Took a little work to get it stable but was kind of nice to see the higher score post

7900's can be a bit tough to clock because they have already been maxed out by the manufacture

The 7800GS+ 512 AGP I picked up for my grandson has gone from 450core to 575core and 650mem to 730mem without any mod and the temp remains below 70c on the special cooler the Bliss card comes with. Its a G71 core just like the 7900GTX so it is possible to up the core voltage to 7900 spec and get another 100MHz out of the core speed.

O/c on video is totally about the manufacture

@ Congo.. there is a program for editing the NV card BIOS called NiBiTor which will allow core and other voltage changes along with fan control changes.. it depends on the manufacture if everything is supported. Some NV cards require a physical change on the card.

Richard I got a full 2000 extra points on my card so it was worth it, and that was above the factory overclock.
I think I must have got a good one somehow.

As I said I am not normally an overclocker so I have a question.

Running with the quad sli activated and then running coolbit, does it overclock all 4 cards by the number that is input or is spread out over the cards. (If you oc by 40 does each card get 40 or 10?)

BTW I had a bigger jump in score with one board installed than I did with both is the reason for the above question.

The normal clock speeds are 500/600. At 580/750 I got some artifacts during the Arctic portion of 06. Backed the cards back to 550/725 and it ran great.

That one I cant answer Richard simply because I have never worked with SLI or the dual cards so I have nothing to base even an educated guess on.

You did exactly what you were suppose to do with the overclock. Assuming the temps are staying well within range (thats the important part) watch for artifacts and back it down until the stop. Typically one drops 10MHz per test until they are gone.

3DMark05

I went to Futuremark and checked my 05 scores. I still say hitting the 10000 mark was a good score with the 7900.

I had my CPU OCed and only hit 9000 with my 7900. Both scores were run in the same motherboard with just the GPU swap, everything else remained the same.

I don't know what weight that 3dm05 places on cpu power, you using a dual core and me a single core, but my cpu was at 2.8ghz during my test, and don't forget my GPU/MEM overclock was very high.

The trick with messing with a BIOS on a video card is learning how to make a BLIND video BIOS flash disk which has a backup of your original video BIOS on it and will flash the card without any keyboard input.

That's what I'll do first then, last time I messed with bios flashing on a video card it scared the heck out of me when everything went dark!
