Scrap  Everything  ???

Postby caveman16 » Sun Apr 02, 2006 10:53 am

Hey Guys and Ladies always nice to "get up" with you,    I found the post started by  "Waspiflab" Sooooo interesting and right on target as to what I'm doing that I just had to start a new post as my topics are based on this  " EVERYTHING ".

Cameron/Congo :  Since the new GPUs will be needing more than 512 mb of RAM  and with CPUs able to handle them,  perhaps I should just go out and continue digging new caves until Sep when the tech catches up to FSX and Vista . ;D

Is there anything "out there" on the market today that will  REALLY  run  FLAT-OUT all sliders on max etc,  FSX and Vista  ???

Am I just spinning my wheels as a "stop-gap"  measure at this time to even build a new PC   ???   Congo has given us all hope in that an upgrade at the time of  FSX and Vista is very plausible .    With Congo and Cameron and you other Guys helping,  there's hope at the door  - - - ahem - - -WINDOWS,  and what about those screenshots shown NOW mentioned by Congo and Kipman  ???

So much to consider  - - -    caveman

Waspiflab's thread is sensationalist and fear mongering.

Business as usual caveman.

Nobody can say what FSX and Vista will be like because they don't exist and neither does DX10 or DX10 hardware.

You are going to find that you may not want Vista. It's going to be a very difficult OS from what I can gather.

Windows XP is finally pretty much fixed up, it will do me for a while yet.

2 years from now you may want a new DX10 card. You may not. We'll see.

I agree. I dual booted Vista for awhile whilst candle was here to find out what he was going on about, and what I found was a crappy representation of Mac OS X produced by MS. DX10 support woulnt be here till July of 07 according to MS, and neithar will vista. Meaning that we wouln't be switching until sometime in 08, or even 09.

So go ahead with getting your 7900GT. Also MS has been saying that we are going to want these 512MB cards to run games at their maxes. Well when XP came out they said the same thing about 256MB cards, and as we can see 256MB cards didnt really become the mainstreem until about 3 years before the next OS came out.

Cheers

Hey Guys,   I was waiting to see what you two would have to say about that.      Thanks for your input and encouragement  to continue with my PC.      Is there such a thing as a GPU having  512 mb of RAM , or more , and if not,  is there some way around it ?          OR - - - - is it needed  ?

Sure do look forward to your answers.     as always - - -  appreciate your help.       caveman

Yes their are 512MB cards out there. The 7800GTX 512MB, 7900GTX, X1800XT, and X1900XTX all have 512MB of RAM. Right now this isn't needed. Its just way too much, and half is never used. In the future (09 ish) this is suppost to be the standird. However in 09 we are going to have DX10 cards, and so buying a 512MB card now is just a waste of cash.

The amount of ram on a video card is not as important as many believe. The determining factors in performance are the GPU standard, the video memory speed and adequate video ram in that order. Good cards ALWAYS have adequate ram. Excess ram may give slightly better performance if all else is equal.

Typically, more ram on a cheaper card is of lower quality/speed and this has a negative affect on performance, not to mention other cost cutting measures that may affect this type of card.

Some special high performance cards carry more high quality ram and also have other performance enhancing features to take advantage of the added ram. Invariably, these cards are more expensive than the standard specification.

Eh the 512MB card wouln't be worth it right now. Games currently dont utalise that much RAM on a card, and FSX isn't going to need it ithor. Its DX10 that MS is claiming to need 512MB. Basically stay away from the half gig, till we get DX10

I agree...

but you can get an X2 or FX60 with a 7900GTX 512 with a really low latency/high FSB set of memory modules in that case I bet

Only one processer. Oh children how you think so small http://www.adamant.com/mbkitspl_a2cewh. ... u=SYSLINE6
2 FX60s, 16G of low latancy RAM, 7900GTX 512MB and 4 500GB SATA2 drives.

Then theirs the ultamate, 4 processers, 32GB of RAM, and god can only imagine how much harddrve space. Only downside is the lack of PCI-E

Eh I know of a kid who has, but XEONs are very unstable for overclocking, and not the greatest for gameing. However getting two Conroes wouldn't be too bad
