Postby SkyNoz » Sun Mar 19, 2006 1:11 pm

Thinking about getting this card, "Radeon X1600PRO 512MB" found here. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102682. I hope  this card can finally retire my Nividia GeForce 5500 FX, hopefully. I want this card to be compatible with the new flightsim FSX and hope it will run it. anyways just asking if their are any probs with this card?

Pros: ?

NOOO!!!! The X1600 is not a card your going to want to buy. Its the equivilant of the X700. Good media card, but not a gameing one. If you wand to spend $280 on a card look at the nVidia 7800GT series. Almost doubble the preformance, and the same cost. Also what everyone needs to think about is that MS has been saying that FSX is going to use DX10 and pixel shader 4. Features that no cards on the market have. So a cheaper upgrade like a 7600GT or 6800XT would be good for now ($180) then when the new gen cards come out, go out and spend teh $300 to get one.

Cheers

Thanks Cameron, that info helps alot!! okay im gonna wait for the new gen cards to come out DX10 hopefully I can find a card that has that specs for 300$ or less. I'm thinking with my Pentium 2.66 mixed with a great card Preferablly 256 OC "DX10" with  1 gig ram will handle the FSX. ;D

Im not too sure about that processer. If its a P4 northwood (like I think it is) It may need some replacing. If I remember right, to be able to play FSX on max settings your going to need a 64Bit enabled processer. Sorry to dump another upgrade on you :( However 64 bit processers arn't that expensive ($250 for a 630 Prescott)

don't wait for the DX10 cards as your cpu is to slow to be able to take advantage of them.

Ah yes and no. You will be able to run DX10 software on a DX9 card, however you wouln't be able to use any of the new HDR, Pixel shadeing, etc effects. There is also talk of DX10 not being bacwards compatable.

Without backwards compatibility then how will FSX run on most systems........ nada, there must be an element of compatibility or it would create absolute chaos.

So a scenario...... You hang out and wait for DX10 to arrive and a compatible card. The DX10 card costs an absolute fortune for 6 months from time of release until discounting starts, ........ FSX hits the markets hopefully by Christmas and then you find out that DX10 and the new cards really don't make a lot of difference to FSX anyway.

I won't be holding my breath or advising anyone else to either. What you guys are talking about is stuff that doesn't yet exist. To me, that's just timewasting and in the meantime, you could be using something that is real and enjoying it. Life is short. Leave the theory to those who don't fly.

True, and thats why I suggested a cheap, but decent upgrade for now that will hold for when DX10 becomes affordable.
