Video Card Up to Par?

Postby Bubblehead » Fri Feb 17, 2006 11:14 am

I've got an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256M for over a year now. I have no problems with it but how is this card rate in terms with what's available in the market now?>

Well its considered a budget card now. The technology in the core is outdated, and it dosnt have GDDR3 RAM on it, so it would be considered "slow" which I disagree with. However if your looking for a step up in the AGP world look at the X800XLs they are a nice $230 for a pretty great package.

I have the Radeon X850 Pro right now, and it is great for performance in flight simulator.  I only have a 2.4ghz processor and 512MB of Ram, but I run fs9 at full graphics levels, with a high fps.  I can't remember the cost, but it is a great step up in performance.

Im not sure about the x800xl.  How much onboard memory does it have, 128 or 256mb?  I use catalyst control center on my pc to help upgrade performance.

The ATI X800XL  has 256 Mb. GDDR3 Ram , My PC is a P4 3 Ghz- 800MhzFSB, 1,5Ghz PC3200 DDR ram, so i am convinced that my lacking is due to incorrect drivers , or driver setup.
I have been running both with, and without the ATI control center .
Lately I was suggested only to install the  ATI control panel. but it seems to be the same.

I am planning a complete PC reinstall , so thats why i am keen to hear about the best ATI drivers setup.

I'm useing cat 6.2 drivers, but have never noticed any gameing difference between the Cat 4.8 drivers that I started with, to the 6.2 ones that I have now.

Your problem is probibly a bad driver install.

Thanks for the quick response.
It might well be a bad driversetup.
Is there a guide to correct driver installations, for a newbee like me.
It seems to be very important , exactly how you remove and then install drivers.

I did a complete new Windows XP install, with service pack2,  catlyst 5.9 display and Control panel drivers (not control Center)
Rotating with pan switch In the outside wiew in full screen ,gives a few momentarely stops .
This card should do better , should it not ?

Depends on where you are and what A/C you are flying ;)

Also what are the specs on the rest of your system. It may be bottolnecking the card.
