The Blasted Modem

Postby Scorpiоn » Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:52 am

I've often had LAN problems, but when I came home from vacations, an interesting opportunity arose.  Whilst re-ordering DSL service, I was constantly calling the company, and out of sheer curiosity, I asked somwone who sounded knowledgeable, spoke acceptable English, and wouldn't give me a cookie-cutter response.  Turns out, the DSL modem I have can only generate 1 IP address, so all this time, fiddling with XP wizards and such, I was beaten from the start.  I was told a router would work, however, seeing as there are a whole 2 PCs on the LAN, and I'm the only one who really uses mine, it's not worth the bother.  I'll just stick with my useless hub. ::)

A note to you new to networking (people like me)! ;)

If you have a need for internet access for both computers you can set up Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Essentially one computer (the server) becomes the 'router' for the other computers on the LAN (clients).

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.
