In follow up to my Joystick(Gameport) Issues..

Postby 4_Series_Scania » Mon Feb 13, 2006 3:36 pm

I've been using my old Soundblaster to "fly" recently, alas, my nice "Audigy 2" soundcard which I've found to be essential for Battlefield 2, has no Gameport plug! hence I've been taking the extreme option of physically removing the Audigy 2 and re-installing the Soundblaster Live just to use my much loved Microsoft Force Feedback Joystick.

I tried having both cards installed & disabling the one I was'nt using, but, I found my joystick was detected by Windows, but, not by any of my CFS or FS games!  >:(

I've finally spent

After all of the above, the "new" stick arrived today, I've just tried the USB to Gameport adapter and.......

It don't work!  :(

Ho hum!

At least I have a USB joystick now, I suppose.

Sadly, I suppose the old gameport FF stick will have to goto e-Bay.

Never mind, it was an idea I had to try.

Paul.

Oh, How could you ? !    :o

Ebay, .......... what an end.... A guy here that flys IL2 had one sent from the USA and paid around $250 after postage for it.

Did the adapter work at all, or did the FFB just not work?

You know the FFB uses the MIDI channel on those sticks right?

Besides, the MS FFB sticks are even better with the FFB disconnected IMHO. No force or spring whatsoever, it's great.

Perhaps, I'll spare it the e-bay fate, I do have a 2.6ghz Celeron (@ 3.4ghz!) with a ti4600 as my #2 machine, I suppose my old SBLive (with gameport) could find its way into that PC and I can have some local I.P. to I.P. dogfights!  :D

The USB adaptor works fine with the non-ff stick that I bought, alas, even with the power, and therefore, the force feedback disabled, my machine throws a wobbler with a blue screen of death as soon as I connect the FF M$ stick with the non-FF sticks adapter. (Hope I hav'nt lost you.....)

Thus, I can now fly in CFS/FS and Battlefield 2, all via my USB port and my Audigy 2 stays installed.

What a carry on! - I hope this is a good testament to the feel & quality of my old M$ FF stick.  :) ;D

if your looking for a replacement FF stick the evo froce I have has very potent FF.  So potent that even though it's a hevey stick it can throw itself off the desk with vilotent snap back you get off overspeading on FS if you leave it alone.   :o

probobly not the best if you plan on relaxing flights :P

But it does take two hands to force the stick up if it wants to go down which is kindof authentic.

Oh god, first we were talking about the great little, Sidewinder, and the the words Saitek came up.  Where did we go wrong?  Anywho, I guess I must consider myself lucky.

When I first got into flightsimming, I flew with a mouse, and thought nothing of it.  Then, in perhaps a sign of the apocalypse, my dad (yes, a father!) offered to buy me a joystick.  I still appreciate that so much.  I had to beg my dad with charts and graphs for something neccessary, yet in this instance he offered to buy me a great little toy out of the blue - and he insisted we do it the correct "Navy" way.  With a coupon we got the Sidewinder.  I had no idea I was getting the best joystick out there, much less one of those rare USB versions.

Of course, none of this helps Paul's poor soul. :-X :-[

Doesn't anything like a PCI gameport card exist?

Well, a PCI gameport does exist imbedded in a multitude of sound cards. If you don't want to add a soundcard to have a gameport, then  you need to carefully research the mainboard you buy to make sure it has a gameport out or at least a gameport riser on the board so you can connect a dongle (usually supplied).

These days, boards with gameport support are getting rare. Asus and Epox are notable exceptions and provide excellent peripheral support on much of their model range.
