New System?

Postby Lazerbeak » Mon Jan 02, 2006 3:59 pm

I made a topic a few days ago asking for upgrade suggestions, and was told that my 5-year old system is pretty much beyond upgrading, and that it'd be better to just get a new system.

A new system for me is currently out of the question, as I'd most likely never be able to afford one. Still, I'm holding out some hope.

That being said, if I should get the opportunity to purchase a new rig, I'm curious as to what you'd recommend. I'm looking for something that'd be good for gaming as a whole, will run FS well, and still be easy on the old wallet. Any suggestions?

Also, remember that I know bugger all about computers, so don't be surprised if I ask any idiot questions. ;D

Thanks in advance.

CPU: AMD Athalon 3600+
GPU: nvidia 6600GT
HDD: Western digital 80GB SATA
RAM: Coursair XMS 1G kit (2-2-2-5 timings)
Mobo: Anything by gigabyte or ASUS for socket 939
Case: Raidmax scorpio
DVD: Lite On

That should run you about $1000 after shipping.
Cheers

I'd go for PCI-E for graphics, the 6600 PCI-E are fairly cheap as I can see! Other then that, I'd go with ctjoyce fully! Cheers, Gunny

EDIT: May wanna get  a 120 Gig hard drive because stuff piles up (Format and use one from old comp if you want) Wont hurt to use old components if they still work (stuff like CD-roms floppys and connectors etc not video cards from stone ages)

Hmmm, that sounds pretty good to me. $1000 seems reasonable. Probably not gonna happen, but at least I have a shopping list ready when/if it does! ;D

Many thanks!

Well you must rember that technology is alawaies changeing. Right now thats concidered decent, but in 6 months its gonna be dragging its heels and cost only $500, while the technology that is currently reigning supream is going to be considered middle of the road, and be only $1000

This is true, and it's the main reason that PC gaming is such a hassle for me. There's been many a time where I basically said, "sod this lark, I give up", and having to keep up with all the stuff that's needed for gaming these days is quickly driving me to that point again.

I may as well just stick with this 5-year-old rig for the rest of my life. It can at least run FS, so that'll have to do.

Well the best way to do things is buy a good system. Then the trick is know when to sell. Sometime around when a new generation of parts come you sell your parts for a fair price that way your not spending loads all over again, recently I sold my 6800Ultra for 350 bucks not that would buy me a 7800GT or I would be 2/3 there to having a 7800GTX. Thats the way to do it. :)

Exactly. The other thing to consider is that you could also upgrade periodacly. Get a new graphics card every three years, or even just get RAM for now. Little things here and there will not take too much out of the old wallet, but will advance your proformance.
