OK for starters what are your system specs? If you can give us a basic rundown of what type of system and operating system you are using someone might be able to help you some more... ;-)

I don't have the same problem, but very similar in that I just get my desktop picture when I startup, but not every time..a simple control+alt+delete and click logoff and login again returns everything to normal again, but very inconsistent way of having a problem...

Hope someone can help you out here! :-)

His specs are in this sig,

however, it would be nice if you told us what OS you are running.

It would also be helpful if you described the problem on slightly more specific terms. (like for example, what programs are you typicaly running when this happens, if you recently installed any new hardware or software, etc.)

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what you mean... ::)...!

For example: If you are playing "Doom", and you "Exit" the program via the game options, the game, and therefore the screen, freezes until you reset the computer...?
Is that what happens...?

Cheers...!

..so you mean that on clicking on the "X" at the top right of the open window, the window refuses to close...?
What happens when you click on the other options at the top right corner of the window, eg: "Minimise", and "Maximise" the window....?

Cheers...

Paul.

P.S. Can you drag the window around the screen...?

Does this happen only when you're online? It sounds to me that IE is playing up. If so try right-clicking the taskbar icon for that window & selecting the Close option. If that doesn't do it hit Ctrl, Alt Delete, select the appropriate program & click End Task. (It should tell you which program is not responding.)  I assume this works the same in XP as other versions of Windows. Be careful not to shut down anything important using the last method.

Suggest you have the basic cleanup and antivirus programs if you don't have already i.e. something like Norton Antivirus, Firewall and Norton Systemworks(which has windoctor, etc.)
www.symantec.com

Also, Microsoft just came out with a free beta anti-spyware program which does a super job of cleaning out adware and spyware possibly clogging up Windows and slowing it down as a result. www.microsoft.com    , then look for the "free" antispyware beta download(it turns off in the summer).

There's also a software tweak FAQ guide on www.avsim.com .(getting rid of unnecessary automatic startup programs through the registry with regedit) It helped improve my bootup almost to factory condition speed. It can inform and help with a lot of startup junk too. Here's the direct link:
