Alienware worth the money?

Postby RSA_SEAL » Tue Dec 28, 2004 1:19 pm

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of looking for a new computer since mine is on it's last legs.  After doing some research and talking to some friends, I found out about Alienware computers.  All of the specs and such seem great, only one problem though - THE PRICE!! :o  Are these computers worth the thousands they cost, or am I better off looking for better deals?

Thanks,

i have heard you can build the same spec computer that you would get from them, for half the price. I think they are charging for the design of the case sometimes ::)

I've looked at the specs on some of the Alienwares and yes they are kick-ass machines but I still think they are charging about $1000 for the case.
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

If you have the knowledge build your own and save some cash!

Of course doing it yourself you need to have a bit of knowledge as it will require some tweaking in BIOS as well as the setup of the machine.

If you have the cash though I suppose an Alienware should perform well, though personally I like building my own systems etc.

Alienware.

I hate them so much.

Not because they are bad comps, they are very good.

But for half the price you could build a comp of the same spec. They also try to add in a bunch of crap you don't need.

Do yourself a favor and build your own comp. You'll get much much better performence and save money and learn quite a lot in the process. Trust me, you'd rather build your own comp than buy an alienware.

I've been scammed those creeps once and from experience, you don't want to get scammed again.

Sure, they make good comps, but calling them overpriced is an UNDERSTATEMENT.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Unfortunately my computer building skill extends to the ability of screwing in my ATI Radeon 9200 AGP graphics card, and the skill ends there.  From what I can gather from your posts the specs are great.  Through my searching I found http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/ - which seems to offer the same specs of Alienware with reduced price.

Yeah the SLI system looks nice...and will upgrade nicely too. 8)  After you buy your new system I recomend you save up  about 500 dollars or even less ::) and buy some low to mid range PC part shtta dont cost to much and give a build a go because its gonna save you alot of money in the long run 8)

Do any of you guys know of any online tutorials on "How to build your own computer" ?  I'm going to need some help along the way to make this thought a reality.

You got the best tutorila right here!! Us lot  ;D

I am sure any question you have can be answered here.

If you have a digi-cam all the better as you could take pics of things you aren't sure about.

I basically learnt by ripping apart old systems and playing!  never really read anything.  When it came to optimising a system is when I started reading on forums and the such as to what little tweaks can be made in BIOS etc.

Yes, Alienwares are nice computers, but way overpriced. You can create a computer with similar specs for only 1/3 of the price. If you are into making your own computer, I highly suggest you do so. It is a great expirience and can be very rewarding. If you have enough money to buy an alienware, you can build your own with the same money and make one that is WAY better. If you ask me, build it.

I build my own PC for less then 1000 Euro (which is what? 850 - 900 Dollars?). I am still in the progress to upgrade it. Just buy your stuff from your local computershop. They are most of the time the cheapest.
