Router trouble

For Christmas I got a new Motorola WR850G router and also wireless PCI card and a USB adapter so I can network our 2 computers to share the ineternet connection printer, etc.

As I was intalling it everything was going good until I got to this part where the wizard wanted me to test the internet connection so I tested it but it said it couldn't connect.  I had the ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the WAN port on the router and had another ethernet cable running from the 1st LAN port to the computer I was configuring it with. Does anybody know why it says it can't connect to the internet?

what type internet connection do you use?

Reason I'm asking is that some services are PPoE and some are PPoA from what I have learned..\

With the wireless router ( US Robotics 8054) that I installed at my house the router will automatically recognize the PPoE, but not the PPoA or such...

reasoning behind this is that the PPoA connection has to be setup manually because the user has to enter the username/password and additional information via router setup page... ;-)

just a thought, but if you can tell us who your service provider is, or give us a link there, I might be able to help you out a little better..;-)

You need to get the following  router settings from your ISP.


VPI
VCI
Encapsulation type
Protocol
Modulation

Then you'll also need your username and password for your ISP and the authorisation type.

I believe that my ISP is PPoE- I have "SBC Yahoo!" DSL.

The screenshot below of the router setup wizard shows the ISP as being PPoE.

I didnt configure it this way, so I'm guessing that all (or most?) DSL connections are PPoE?  It automatically recognized my connection as being PPoE but I still had to fill in this information (below) so I guess it doesnt auto-recognize the ISP like yours does?-

Allrighty, have you got the book for the thing? Or just a CD? I've done searches and looked around with the best results being found at the manufacturers web-site which was basically just a manual for it...

Have you tried manually setting the ip address as described in the book/online manual found on the manufacturers site? It doesn't seem like this is the answer, but just an idea...

I would suggest reading any help files ........  Then contacting your ISP and asking for the information that is in my last post.
Once you have that info then manually set up the router.

The information you're asking for are the basic settings for the router and how it connects

ok I guess what I was doing was setting it up the 'easy software setup' so now I am going to try the manual way.  So also I guess I need to get the PPoE service name from SBC (my ISP)?

Jared- You have SBC don't you? because you have the YIM icon and it says your email is at sbcglobal.net like mine...  I know you said it did it automatically, but when you config'd your router did you still have to enter in the email, password part?

I tried contactig the ISP thru the 'live chat' thing and that idn't work.  I tried emailing them, THAT didnt work

Jared could you maybe look at what your router's configuration is in terms of the information eno was talking about?  (PPoE service name, modulation, protocol, stuff like that?)  Because since I cant contact my isp and you have the same ISP as me (I think) maybe I could use the same info as you use on your router...?

Well, I found out what the problem was

I called Motorola and they asked me a bunch of questions and stuff like that and they told me to change the router from being DSL/PPoE configured to make it cable configured, even though the modem is a DSL modem.  So I did that and then guess what, it worked

For some reason they said its acting like a cable modem even though its really a DSL modem

I have SBC DSL, once you get it working I think you will be happy. SBC uses PPPoE which requires a user name and password. SBC does not require a host name or domain name in the router, my host name and domain name fields are blank. My router also has a field for service name and that is also blank. Since my router supports PPPoE I have never loaded SBC's software. If your router supports PPPoE it will have an option that says PPPoE or something that says "my isp requires me to login" or something along those lines.
