O&O Defrag problems

Postby stiz » Sat Dec 11, 2004 5:47 pm

I downloaded the program O&O Defrag from downloads.com as it sounded good in the defragmenting thread but there is one major problem, i cant do anything with it. I can open it but thats it all the options are greyed out  ???

I'm using the 30 day free trail but it says it runs like the registard version??

The pic explains what i am talking about

Did i do something wrong or is it the program??

Thanks in advance

O&O is what I use and it is GREAT!!

When you first installed it did you have a "set up" screen?

That screenshot is what a program usally looks like after a trial period is over, are you getting a nag screen that shows how much time you have left?

I would un-install it completely, including the folder in "programs", if you have a registry cleaner clean any remnants and try to re-install.
There have been a few times I downloaded from that site and the program was already expired, or this will happen if you had tried a program in the past as a trial and are trying to re-install it.

I think I have the answer too your problem!!

I managed to get my O&O to do just what yours is (by accident  :-[ )

goto "start" "run" and type "services.msc"

This will show a list of running services on the computer, scroll through until you find "O&O Defrag" and make certain that this is set to automatic. Reboot and try to start it.

I set mine to "manual" while attempting to tweak XP a little, when it is set to manual and you start the program I ended up with a error someting like can not connect to terminal???

I went back and set it to "automatic" and rebooted and wala works like a charm ;)

You'll notice that you have many options on how to defragment.
I use the "complete access" this rearranges the file structure in its first run so depending on how much you have on the HD could take awhile, but it puts the files used most often towards the front of the HD, meaning the HD doesn;t have to work as hard to find things. After a inital run of "complete access" I normally defrag using the "space" method, pretty quick and real thorough . Be sure to read all the options so you choose the one that suits you the best.
Another nice thing is that you can also defrag you page file with it!
Glad your problem was solved, like I said I came across the answer by mistake, went to run it and the screen looked the same as you screen shot ;D LOL! Both learned something new ;)
