I just had my comp reformatted. Does anyone, who really knows what they are talking about, know the proper procedure for installing fsx delux & acceleration? What drive & location etc. Useing win 10.

I have FSX Gold with Acceleration installed on Windows 10 64 bit.
This is what I would recommend.
Install FSX first and if you have more than one drive install it on the drive that does not have your operating system on it.
If you only have the C drive than DO NOT INSTALL IT IN THE DEFAULT LOCATION I know others have done this and just turned down the UAC but by doing this you can open up opportunities for bad things to happen.
Just make a folder on the C drive any where except in the PROGRAMFILES (86) FOLDER
Once FSX is installed launch it so you can activate it some say to fly a short flight but I never did.
Now the tricky part is Acceleration install it and keep your fingers crossed that after it installs and you launch FSX again it gives you the activation screen for Acceleration if it does not you will get an error message
That is what happened to me. In order to solve this problem it involves changing the registry which some people including myself would rather not do.
I had even manually installed service pack 1 and 2 but FSX would still not function correctly I kept getting all kinds of texture problems. Now I no longer have any of those issues
But trust me it was a piece of cake
here is the link you will need https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 720?auth=1
Now when I did this after getting to the place it tells you to go to I noticed that partmgr was all ready there and I thought that was not the problem. But then I noticed that the instructions stated to put PartMgr and thought it could make a difference so I deleted partmgr and inserted PartMgr and hit enter I than got a message that no blank spaces were allowed and they would be removed . I had not put any blank spaces in but I chose to accept the message which would remove them. Than I exited the registry editor and fired up FSX and low and behold I got the activation screen i entered the key and to this day fsx works with no problems.
But Microsoft has made several updates since I had originally installed FSX so you might get lucky and not have to go through this.
Any question fell free to ask 8-)

Thank you for that info. The hard drive on my pc failed so I had it replaced and the shop installed windows 10 in place of windows 8.1 like I had before. I had FSX installed on an external hard drive and it worked fine, I thought no problem. Well, when I plugged the external drive into the new machine it showed it but said I had to format it to use it, so I took it to the shop and they said it was bad also but they could still read all the info on it so they transferred it to a new external HD for me. Now I still have everything but when I try to start it I'm told windows cant find the fsx.dll. I'm afraid I might be reinstalling after all.

If the C drive on your computer has been replaced, you will probably have lost your registry, so all programs, whichever drive they are on, will have to be reinstalled in order to build up a new registry. I do not understand why Win10 can’t read your external drive. My new Win10 computer can read all my external drives from the previous WinXP computer. What is the format: NTFS or FAT32?

Having FSX on an external drive might not give the best performance, depending on type of drive and USB connection. I have mine on a second internal SSD drive (they are much cheaper now) and it runs fine with all settings maxed. In any event, I would suggest reinstalling FSX and follow the method that Gary has outlined.

Good luck!

I would stay away from putting any operating system on an external drive if for some reason you loose you USB ports you will not be able to boot your system. And it is possible to loose your usb ports.
In my case I have two internal drives and one external drive. I have to disable fast boot on windows 10 or the light on my external drive blinks when I shut down my system
My external drive uses USB 3.2
USB 3.2 ports have blue insides not gray They are a little faster than the older USB ports.

If it helps, I just installed FS-X on a WIN10 computer. I did a clean installation, using the original discs. I've already taken a couple of learning flights (it's incredible how much you forget after a few <cough> years away...), so I'm waiting before I install acceleration and start adding my favorites.

If you look at the top of this forum you will see a sticky about installing FSX
It is advised that you do not install FSX in the default location as it can present problems with addons you want to use in FSX. For reasons no one seems to know Microsoft treats the PROGRAM FILES(86) folder as some kind of a system folder and locks it down. Some people have turned down there user account control which gets around this problem but to me the best place to install FSX is on a drive that does not have your operating system on it. The problem there is not every one has more than one hard drive so If all you have is your C:drive than install FSX any place other than the PROGRAM FILES(86) folder
