WEATHER ADVISORY - STAY HOME TONIGHT 1/1/17

Postby OldAirmail » Sun Jan 01, 2017 8:31 pm

Butte, Montana (KBTM) to Missoula, Montana (KMSO)

Tonight 1/1/17

Winter Storm Warning

Butte/Blackfoot Region, Montana

4 hours ago – National Weather Service

remains in effect until 5 PM MST Monday. Wind Chill Watch remains in effect from Monday....

Not much to see, and I'm sure that no sane pilot would go up in this weather. Still, if you have real-time weather and realistic settings, this can be a real challenge.

If I can make it to the Missoula alive, I'll change the visibility and get some pictures.

Meanwhile, if there's anyone out there that wants a challenge....

Normal visability

A break in the clouds. :D

LATER - I can't get over some of the mountains. I'll have to go the long way around.

Weather closing in, visibility minimal.

In and out of the clouds. Too high, and I can't see what I'm going to hit.

Most of the time I'm flying low and just avoiding the mountain ridges.

Another break in the low flying clouds.

Still not in range of the airport signal.

Just picked up the VOR signal!

DME says 40 miles to go, but after this valley, the mountains get even higher. I'll be flying up in the clouds again

The wind is picking up again, blowing me all over the place.

Gota get her up higher.
Image

No good. It's a struggle to get over some of the ridges, and they're wrapped tightly with clouds.

Found the highway that goes to Missoula. I'll follow that. :D

Still got good visibility, but much better!

Down on the ground and looking forward to the bathroom. :D

After flight
I checked the speed and altitude limits, and I should have had no problem with the Maule 7. If I fly it much more I'll have to look into a little engine work.

Yep, the Arctic air mass is making its way South, and will rear its ugly head around our parts by late Tomorrow night. By Wednesday, we'll have snow in Denver, and Temperatures in the teens F. Our Lows will be below Zero or darned close to it.

Typical for this time of the year, since the National Western starts up in about a week and a half. Them thar cows really like the Cold...

Yet again you fool me into thinking that its always nice and warm and cosy in Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, even in the Winter!

I can understand it being nasty and cold up in the Northern States bordering Canada, but the thought of snow in Death Valley, etc, really confuses me.... :? ....!

Paul,

I have to admit... I LOVE THE SNOW!

Let it dump ½ a Meter of the white stuff, with the Temps hovering around 0º F! As long as I'm dressed for it, it's all good.

Don't mind shoveling it one bit, and I'm used to driving in it as well.

We have a Saying... "'Tis a Privilege to Live in Colorado". Having the snow around is one of those Privileges. It helps keep us out of trouble in the Spring & Summer.

And... I don't even SKI!

Alan :ugeek: :D

Nice Photo, OAM... just my kind of place to play!

Plain old snow is no big deal really but get a layer of ice under it and the fun begins! Especially trying to drive on it with anything less than an AWD vehicle.
My '05 Dodge Caravan absolutely sucks in that situation. Anyone who wants too can stop by here on Wednesday night or Thursday for a dose of winter warmth.
Over night low is set for -14F and the HIGH on Thursday is -7F. On the way to school or work at 0800 the windchill will be -32F working up to a balmy -26F by 1700.
Gotta love it!! It does keep the door to door salesmen away

An Aircraft Mechanic only needs two tools, Duct Tape and WD40.
If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to - use the WD40.

You Blokes are having me on!.... .....!

No Human Beings in their rights minds like the cold!
Like Butterflies, we were designed to be kept warm and cosy!

We slow down and become confused in the cold.

Over here in England, looking back, I seem to have spent most of my life in uncomfortably cold and damp conditions, which now seem to affect my bones!

Its possible that the English Weather is often damp in Winter cold conditions, rather that cold and dry like arctic places, which makes it uncomfortable to be in?

What aggravates the situation for me, is the fact that for the past 27 years, my only means of daily transport to anywhere, are my Motorcycles, so any unsuitable, rain, snow, ice, etc, driving conditions, means that I cant leave my house!
2 wheels, ice, and snow don't mix!
....and no public transport nearby!

Also, in my past 83 years, only the past 5 years have been enjoyed with the pleasure of central heating and double glazing, so most of my life has been spent in freezing cold conditions indoors during the Winter months.
I can recall times when the bedroom windows were covered in thick ice...on the INSIDE!

So...my Chums, you can see why I have no love of Cold, Snow, and Ice! It has made large slices of my life very uncomfortable for far too long!
Only 3 months 3 weeks (it seems) of the year in England are devoted to Summer, so its mostly cold for most on the year!

There must be a nice place, somewhere, to enjoy the rest of my days in warmth and comfort on this lump of rock?... ...!

Just poked my nose outside; 5*C/41*F!......Far too cold for me to be out in the open air!

Paul....I need toasting!..... :D ....!
