When I was a teenager not at High School in the U.S.A. (summer vacation time) I did not go back to mothers home & was in non speaking terms with my ex-general father. I went to the South East of México, in the Blue Mountains (or Sierra Madre del Sur encompasing Tabasco, Campeche & Chiapas states) to work as administrative help in cattle ranches or banana, cacao & coffee plantations. Most of the local administrators were excelent handling workers & had good results with production, although many did not even know how to read or write, their accounting was verbal & irregular paying too much taxes to government officials. That was my job: to print forms with visual icons instead of words, and four lines that you strike across when all fingers of one hand counted five, like a prissoner's calendar until all cattle, or drums of product or banana clusters were accounted for. I also provided fresh meat from the sorrounding fauna: deer, boar, tepezcuintle (paca or capibara), opposum (a real plage for any crops!). That way we avoided cattle being eaten by cowboys. When crossing a Cacao plantation, opening one pod and introducing a bead into the mouth, was like sucking a never ending lemon!! At the ranch they would fill a jug with the raw beads, added watter & brown suggar: much better than lemonade & cooled the watter too! In those days electricity was unheard off in the Jungle, much less fridges.

My weapons of choice were a Mouser 30-06 (for shots from the other side of the river, waiting for a deer to take watter), a 12 gage shotgun with two barrels (one with heavy ammo, the other with light ammo: one never knew if the target was going to be a boar or a goose), and a .22 Colt Woodsman semi-automatic pistol (we called it "caballito" because of the prancing horse, very precise!! one could hit the little hens at 500 yards in the shooting range, iF hand was steady), for rabbits or snakes (althoug a stick is much more useful to control snakes, like the Fer de Lance). I loved it, reminded me of uncle Sacha's Lugger, having that round barrel. Long rifle meant the cartrige ranged real far... and was non expensive!! Very easy to clean & oil, logical taking apart & puting back together. When hunting almost on a daily basis, it's a must to oil weapons well.



I developped a prefference for hunting at night since its fresher, when owls are investigating what is the new intruder going to scare, like rodents, black feet (a beauty they are!!) or the dreaded & deadly snakes. Owls love to brush your hair in salutte like "Here I am", startling you because their flight is so silent you never hear them in advance, & they like human company, because our clumsiness scares many prays for them.

Not that past times were better, NO! But hiding from other humans in the Forest for almost full 4 years at the beginig of my life, teaches A LOT about nature & it's inhabitants languaje. The Jungle is a tropical Forest with the same language & some in habitants might be different, some are not. I was familiar with owls from the very begining, they guarded the grain against rodents back then in la Françe. They had a nest in the silo & were considered as family pets.

No, past times were not better: they just were ARE a PRiViLEDGE!!

Nobody mentioned "French chocolate truffles". One must be careful to choose the right female friend for that gift, she will become adicted & it's a powerfull afrodisiac!! With a gift like that, you CAN allways get what you want... (even if you didn't want her!! So, choose CAREFULLY or suffer consequences like MARRiAGE)
