..so Doug.... ;) ....

..overall, was it worth the effort to change from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10?

What benefits, if any, were there?

I'm still running Windows 8.1 on my sooper-dooper, Gaming Tower Computer, together with all my various programs and games, etc, and it seem to be working just fine!

So....do I need to bother?... ...!

Paul...generally an old stick-in-the-mud!.... ...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

If you're happy with what you've got I suggest not updating. My main desktop PC which I use mainly for FSX is still working happily on WinXP.

I think it depends on what you use the PC for. As far as I'm concerned the only advantage of updating to Windows 10 is that it stopped those annoying reminders from MS every time I started the laptop.

I would actually have preferred Windows 7 but my new laptop came with Win 8.1 installed so I was forced to have it. One advantage of all this is that I now have experience with MSFS on all MS operating systems since Win95, apart from the awful Vista.

I hope your XP machine isn't connected to the Web Doug (an unsupported OS is a hackers delight!)

I'm enjoying Win 10 64Bit, I find it faster than 7 especially on boot up & shut down and I've noticed a fair improvement in FPS in games running under SLI (I have two GTX580's) where under Win 10 I was getting considerable "micro stutter" in GTA V especially, all gone under 10.

I've disabled the snooping side of the OS (which is more aimed at mobile devices) and after substituting my FS9.exe with a no-cd patch that now runs beautifully on 3 monitors, FSX seems better too (I was getting black screens but new Graphics drivers seem to have cured that too)

Win 10 doesn't use as many resources as 7 from what I can see and - once you've deleted the Windows.old folder - its footprint i.e. How much space it takes on your OS drive, is reduced.

I hated 8 and 8.1 with a passion, the only thing I've added to 10 is Classic Shell which gives it more of a familiar look, it's a terrific OS, especially as a free upgrade albeit only until you change hardware from what I read.

Good to see you old friend. :)

I don't use my desktop machine (or FSX) much these days but, contrary to popular belief, I still get regular security updates for WinXP so it is still supported to a limited extent.

I'm getting prompts to upgrade while I can for free.

So what's the verdict? Worth updating (as opposed to upgrading) to W10? I just don't want to find I have to go through hoops to get FSX stuff working again.

if you dont want the upgrade reminders, simply go into the win10 upgrade window on your taskbar and cancel your reservation.
dont worry, it will remain free for another 10 months. You simply reinstate your reservation for an update when you are ready for it.

Just for your information, I never did get past XP on my older pc's. My new one came with Win 8.1 and I had to go through some trauma getting FSX to work which eventually failed due to some unknown glitch. So I "reverted" to FS9 and enjoyed myself immensely. However I decided to udate to Windows 10 when my turn came and FS9 refused to accept the disk so I decide to re-install FSX gold. I had no trouble whatsoever there and now lots of my time is spent re-installing the sceneries and 'planes that I had before. Now though, I have everything FSX on a removable 1Tb HD usb drive. I have everything maxed out and it's great. All my other programs work better, faster and the interface is user friendly. It takes less memory to run and I'm considering buying a copy to install on my XP laptop which only has 2Gb memory. I have that much confidence. :ugeek:

FSX and FS9 have both taken to running windowed but black screen when I go to full screen, that said, I've deleted my windows.old folder now (and freed up 26Gb!) so there's no going back now in this install (I upgraded keeping my old Win 7 programs) so far, so good. :)

I keep FSX windowed and expand the window to cover the full screen. The only thing that might bother you is the task bar is always visible. However, I don't mind that as I like the option of being able to adjust the volume or read an important e-mail.
