On the most basic level, even the best flight sim will not match your favorite areas.

The question then, is do you want appropriate realistic looking scenery, or photoreal scenery.

Photoreal scenery will come the closest to looking like the area that you know, IF it's available for your area. More often than not, you'll have to fly 600, or more, meters above the ground level for it to even look just "ok".

There are some exceptions, though. This is one of my favorite flying areas at the moment.

Grand Canyon (Free) Works in FSX & Prepar3d.

And Death Valley (Free) Works in FSX & Prepar3d.

"Appropriate realistic looking scenery" can give you a VERY good feeling for an area. Like this;

Australia (Payware) Works in FSX & Prepar3d.

But most of what you know isn't going to be there. Roads, rivers, most lakes, and mountains will (usually) be where they should.

Unless you have a very slow internet connection, I'd suggest downloading the Flight Simulator X Trial Version directly form Microsoft. If you like it, then do as Sprocket suggests and get the get the FSX "Gold" edition.

Sprocket did a good job of explaining "mesh".

A mesh for the entire world comes with all the flight sims of course. But some areas are more equal than others.

The US/Canada and most of Europe have better quality mesh than the rest of the world.

Many areas that don't have great elevations (like the Rocky Mountains or the Alps) were short changed.

This had more to do with the common size of the hard drives back then, than anything else.

So "flattish" areas , are flat.

This is the island of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, as seem by FSX.

This is the same island with a better mesh.

What's the point?

FS Pilotshop has a sale on a very good mesh for South Africa - FSGenesis - NEXTMap South Africa.

BTW
This is how it looks with FSX Global.

Hi there, & Welcome. Maybe a spoke in the wheel here..

There is a LOT of South African scenery available...Google 'aeroworx' & search avsim.com & flightsim.com. There is also a forum for us virtual pilots on www.avcom.co.za.

Scenery & mesh is available for FSX (&P3D) as well as FS9. I am the 'librarian' at our virtual flying club 'Cape Virtual' here in Cape Town. We use both FS9 &FSX.
Many of us still use FS9 because it uses less computer overhead & just works. The freeware aeroworx scenery also works perfectly on this.

You are welcome to PM me for further info.

Zswobbie1, THANKS.

The main reason that I've flown so little over Africa, was the impression that there was very little scenery available.

Can you a post a few pictures of places to start? I'm TOTALLY ignorant on South Africa.

Sorry, no pics at the moment. But once you have the aeroworx scenery & mesh installed, Table Mountain, in Cape Town, looks how it should, instead of a blob. Also, once installed, look at Cape Town (FACT), my home town, & fly up the east coast. Also, aeroworks gives accurate roads & power lines. All free There are quite a lot of file to download & install, but so worth while. I have actually compiled a 'library' of all of the files foe an easier install. However, I'm in Cape Town & cannot pass that file on. Have a look at the virtual forum on avcom.co.za for further info.

I find that the Flight Sim only really works if you concentrate on places that you are VERY familiar with, and install the best of the scenery, mesh, land-class, etc, available....

..and even then it will never appear exactly anything like what you see out of your car window.....

Flight Simming is all in the mind of the beholder!.... :D ...!

I have lots of California Scenery, etc, installed, and it looks quite good, compared to real photographs of the same areas....
...but the Flight Sim will never reproduce the exact, same, real scenery as viewed in real live......(up to now!)!

Well, Pantoffel.

I hope that we've made it simpler for you to decide what you want. :D

I love that description!.... :D ...!

.....most obvious when two (or more) Multiplayer Pilots are describing in detail, on line, in real time, what they see around them, when flying in the same area....

Each one views and describes a different scene!

Because of their different hardware and software and scenery add-ons and settings!

Nice pictures.. Do you have the aeroworx mesh installed?
Table Mountain should look far better. FTX IS AMAZING. I still have to install Vector. The aeroworx mesh & scenery is compatible with all of that.

Great! You've been moving along.

I've not installed any additional mesh or scenery other than what I listed in the post above - (Prepar3d V2.2 with FTX Global & Vector V2).

When I've searched for aeroworx before, I've pulled up a lot of outdated and useless results. Buried in that were a good many dead ends too.

Strangely, having woken at 4:00 am to take a short walk ( :D ) I've found what you must be referring to - aeroworxsa!

Image

That should give me a good starting point.

Thanks
