Why did they wait 20 months to start this?

I don't know? But I would hazard a guess that that ship is mired in liabilities and no one wanted to touch it until all the I were dotted and tees were crossed.

They didn't wait 20 months. It took 20 months to build the construction to roll the ship in an upright position, into a cradle mounted on the seafloor. That a precision job, you can't just tie a couple of ropes to a ship and start pulling. It has to stay in one piece.

Upright at last...>>> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24121480

Now the Islanders just want to see the back of it, towed away!

At a cost estimated at more than 600 million euros ($795 million), it is expected to be the most expensive maritime wreck recovery ever, accounting for more than half of an overall insurance loss of more than $1.1 billion.

Perhaps they should rename it Costa Plenty. ;)

An amazing feat of heavy engineering, so far...
(Twice the tonnage of the Titanic, to pull upright!)... :o ....!
Lets hope the rest of it goes well, for the engineers involved.

The ship (or what's left of it) will stay in place on it's underwater supports until Spring next year. Only then will the work be done to get it floating and towing it off to a port in Italy. So for now those islanders still have something to watch Paul.
