Paint Kits

Have you any suggestions for additional forums or improvements?

Paint Kits

Postby Scottler » Thu May 20, 2004 12:57 pm

Not so much a forum suggestion, but perhaps a file library suggestion.

What about a section of downloads specifically for paint kits?

Repainting is quite popular in the sim community, and as we all know, publishers frequently release all white textures of their airplanes for us to play with.

But finding them is a nightmare most of the time.  A dedicated section would be a great addition, and a sure fire way to bring more traffic to the site!
Great edit, Bob.

Or you could just use the new improved search facility Scott ;)

Search is fine and dandy, except that you don't always know what parameters the author has set.

For example, I could search for "paintkit", and the author may have listed it as "all white".  Search for "all white" only to find the author has listed it as "base textures".  The list is endless.  Plus, I don't always know what model I'm looking for when I'm in the painting mood.

Not as easy as it may seem.

I think "Upsidedown2much" would be more appropriate.

Actually I think it's a great idea.

Then ...

The next problem is just as you say - finding the damn things! & Like you say - what are the keywords?

::)

wouldn't it be easier to add the word Paint Kit to the descriptiond as you come across them. then the search would pick them up, it also saves the need to sort the paint kits into props, civil jets, etc

You can actually "hide" search keywords by making the font colour the same as the bg colour. Done this way you can include many search keywords without making it readily apparent, which would allow for using codes instead of actual words.

For example:PK9Paint Kit for FS 2004 planeAC8Aircraft for FS 2002UT6.5Utility for CFS 1

Dump a search reference on the search page and you have a standardized search system. It would even be possible to add a drop down that would have plain text search terms that would enter the search codes into the search.

There I go making suggestions for more work for Pete again...time to hide. :)

Sounds like a great idea... Might also encourage a few people to try their hand at repainting.

No I think what Pete means is how would HE find them to move them to the new category.

This wouldn't at all be an easy process, admittedly.  Perhaps a temporary note somewhere on the forums or the upload page asking developers to identify the files which they've uploaded that are paint kits?  Then an additional note to downloaders asking that if they DL a file, to post it somewhere in the forums letting you know?

I dunno...there's gotta be a way.  lol  I'll help any way I can. ;)

I think the best thing would be for someone to manually go through all the aircraft downloads and write down the names of all the repaint files, and then forward it onto Pete. I think this may be a several person job however!

Ozzy ;)
