So, to fly multi-player, both players have to fly the same airplane?

No, but both, or however many, need to have the add-ons, or the server does, or something like that. I'm a bit vague on that point, myself.

If the Pilots are using non-default Aircraft, then ALL the Pilots have to have each others identical Aircraft in their own Hangar for them to show up correctly!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Nav....mostly default.... ;)...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

Not at all.

It's only required if you want to see the other persons plane correctly.

For this tour, we all have a similar plane,
with our own custom paint jobs,
and then we also all have a copy of the other members paint scheme for that plane,
so that when we fly, we see each others plane as it should look.

You can fly in whatever plane you choose,
and if someone else doesn't have it, FS will pick one in your hangar to display. Usually the same one you are flying.
So you could conceivably be flying a 747, and show up as a Cessna.

That's the beauty of using the default planes online, everyone has them.   ;)

This goes for all versions of MSFS. :)
